Well, they will play the next gen games, but not on high settings. Remember that the new cards will not come out soon and even they will be very expensive. The 6800 will be renamed 7something so tecnically it is next gen lol.

Are you looking for PCI-E or AGP? If it's PCI-E then you can safely buy an x800 series knowing it will work with ATI's cross fire in the future. For the 6800 this will of course work with SLI, but there have been some rumours that NVidia will drop making the 6800 line in favour of the 7800 line including vanilla, GT, GTX and maybe a 512mb GTX Ultra, so 6800's might get a little scarce.

R520 and G70 based cards for PC will be expensive > £300 easiliy. It might be worth waiting to get a cheaper x800/850xt or 6800 ultra but I doubt the prices of these will drop too much.

Whats your budget and current system specs and what do you want to play?

You don't have much choice but to wait until PC games support more powerfull multi-core CPUs similar to what the consoles have. You need equal measures of GPU & CPU power for modern games to perform well. You will likely not be able to equal the consoles when they are first released but if you can stand to wait then PC will regain the lead due to constant upgrading compared to the fixed spec of the consoles.

I'd be buying me an X800 Pro or a 6800 right now

    but I'm wierd.

An X800 Pro will destroy your 9800 Pro...mine did.

Yeah, but when the G70/R520 tip up you should be able to grab a cheap secondhand 6800/X800 from all the more-money-than-sense brigade upgrading.

    6800 GT ,...just.

But I love Radeons...and weirdly, I prefer ATI drivers now, over nVidia.

    How times change.

If I was buying a card right now, I'd be buying a second hand X800 Pro.

In fact...I did, but it was 4 months ago. It is bleedin fantastic

and as an aside, I had a 6800 normal 128 and it was very fast indeed....BUT while it peaked fast, it also slowed more than I's have liked.

I like consistent frame rates...and X800 is consitent. Not THE fastest...but it doesnt slow down/bog down in the heavy stuff.

I have to agree with you there - if I were to get a card right now, it would be ATi simply because of the drivers (obviously if nVidia were far better, I would buy nVidia, but performance is still fairly close). Incidently, the Catalyst 5.6 is supposed to bring a decent performance boost: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=23594. Assuming it's true, it could be quite interesting to see how ATi and nVidia compare.

If you're not a hardcore gamer your system is plenty fast. You should wait until you upgrade your motherboard and CPU before you upgrade your videocard.
