    From 9800pro to .....?

A good friend of mine is considering upgraded from his 9800pro to something with a bit more oomph. He uses a Shuttle SFF so obviously the new card will need to fit into one, and be AGP. I haven't been following the GFX industry in the last 6 months much so don't really know what to suggest to him, got any advice?

Not really, he mentioned selling the 9800pro on for 70+ quid, and maybe throwing another 200 into the budget, but I know he'll be willing to chuck more money into it if needed.

X800xl, x800pro and 6800gt. I would say either the first or the last. My 6800gt is great in my sn45g.

6800GT gets my vote (biased maybe? ). IMO ATi is good for benching, nVidia is good for gaming. However, you won't be disappointed by either, so it all boils down to if he prefers ATi or nVidia.

For ATi, I would recommend X800XL.

id go high end, and get either a 6800ultra, or a x800xt or x850xt.

Don't be so harsh on the fellow, despite the silly suggestion, he does only have 96 posts bless him! lol

I would got 6800gt or X800xl, the NVidia will have better tvout, but the Radeon should be a better all round performer.

Also in a shuttle another consideration is which one dissipates most heat?

They are definately available for the ATI cards, look at the computex write ups. I'd bet a pint someone somewhere has made a 6800 low profile cooler, though it could be water based Just can't actually remember seeing one.

However, I do remember 6800's in shuttles before too from somewhere. My only concern would be that of the PSU and could it supply enough wattage.

ok, so i hit google for that one: http://techreport.com/reviews/2004q4...5/index.x?pg=1

muddyfox470's comment may have been a little off, but talking like that to members won't get you very far.

Despite whether or not an X800XT or a 6800U will physically fit into a Shuttle or not, the guy's working on a budget. He said he wants to sell his 9800Pro and chuck in £200. I doubt very much he'll get £70 for his 2nd hand 9800Pro so getting a 6800GT or an X800XL would be fantastic for the job at a reasonable price. Both cards will perform extremely well in all the latest games and not everyone has to have the latest and greatest for the sake of getting a few extra numbers in the latest 3DMark application...

Fear not, the Shuttle PSU will cope with the latest cards.

He has a budget of £200+ old 9800pro (say £50?) and is willing to chuck in a bit more. I sold my BFG 6800 Ultra recently for £285.

If he wanted to buy new, he would need to look at GT type spec cards for around that sort of money, or the ATI equivalent.

There is alot more performance with the x800xl and 6800GT so much so that an older system will hold them back to some degree. Your buying AGP when really you'd be better with PCIe. You could spend more and get faster cards but why? Anything less and it's not worth upgrading from the 9800pro and anything more is increasingly held back by the rest of the system. I wouldn't get any more or less than the x800xl/6800GT for my XP 2500+ just doesn't seem worth it.

6800GT works brilliantly on a 2500+... by the looks of it m8, 6800GT or X800XL are the ways to go. If you like to see nice benchies then ATI would be a nice vacation for the next 6 months. ignorance is bliss... 6800GT rips thru SM3.0 games as if it was chewing soaked bread.... Blissss

Talking sense. Unless your'e running a high end chip it's pointless going further. And at the end of the day being able to say "hey, I get 124 fps with x800xt/6800 ultra rather than 115fps with x800xl/6800gt" is a bit sad.
