Will it make a really big difference on a TFT monitor?
Will it make a really big difference on a TFT monitor?
It might. The 16.2 million color LCD use 6-bit TN panles and get 16.2 million colors by intepolation, the true number of colors each pixel can display is only 262,144. There is often an immediatle noticeable difference in color quality between 8-bit (true 16.7 million color) and 6-bit (interpolated 16.2 million color). Depending on the monitor it might not be all that big, but it will be there. They sacrifice color quality for response time.
Its a 19" samsung 8ms response TFT, it looks great, but I havent seen any reviews of it. Its £207 at ebuyer.
I really want a 19" tft, but cant spend more than £230. Has to look nice too, black and silver would be a bonus.
anyone else got some advice?
This the LCD you were looking at (or someing close)?

Thats close, the one im after is the SM913N, here http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=83914
I'm pritty sure the LCD element itself is the same. Should be identical image quality.
found a review for it on toms hardware, they say it does have the fastest response time, and excellent for gaming. But it has no DVI and they also say its very basic in terms of features.
6bit vs 8bit really depends compleatly on which brand and model of tft you buy. Samsung is a good brand and I would guess the interpolation on their 6bit monitors is quite good.

Viewsonic VX912. It is worth spending the extra. My ones (one for me one for my brother) were both £370 when we got them, although they had only just been released. They are 12ms (you would hardly notice the difference from 8ms to 16ms). The colour quality is great even though they are 6 bit panels. Y
ou can only notice it when theres lots of colours on screen and there is a big space with very similar shades of the same colour. The interpolation makes it those colours flicker a tiny bit as it does the interpolation but its not really annoying atall. You wont notice it in games.
Compared to the sony tft with similar specs, this is a lot nicer.
Also has DVI + VGA input, nice OSD . Cant really think of any features I would want that this hasnt got..
One thing to note though: scan is dodgy - almost like OCUK but with better support... Read their t&c. I would not recommend buying from them since they decided to make me wait months then send me the wrong monitor which was utter poo (sony...).
Lowestonweb are part of evesham *who are one of viewsonics official distributers*. I bought mine form their, however lowest have a habbit of not getting your card authorised or generally not knowing how to use them. Id have no problem buying from them, spent about £1,500 with them so far..
OCUK probably sell them, but would you trust them?

Think I will get the 19" 8ms Samsung TFT, the reviews seem very good.
you'll not notice any difference unless your working with colour critical images..
