seen the news item about 6600 being avail for SLI offering a cheap way to SLI(as cards should be approx £80 each).
What I want to know is which is faster, 2 6600's in SLI or a 6800gt or ultra?

I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.
A 6800Ultra is definatly faster than two 6600GT in SLI, the 6800GT is a toss up.
One signficant factor is that SLI cards do not double the ammount of effective video memory as the same stuff must be kept on each card. In newer games or at high resoltuion with AA and AF 128MB of effective video memory can be a reall perfromance breaker (as opposed to 256).
If your going to be useing lower resolutions then the 6600gt's might have the edge.
If your going to use lower resolutions one 6600GT is plenty.
If I say that one X800 XL is faster than a pair of 6600GTs in SLI mode + quite a lot cheaper than the Ultra - will I get shot ?

TBH if you're gonna think about this as a 2 card purchase, you might as well get one 6800 GT and get another later on.
IF you already HAVE a 6600 and are upgrading, clearly the next 6600 is the choice.
Or as Andrej says....someone whom I have lots of time for, and whom I might marry, is right.
But then I'm a fan boih

You either get one as a nice mid range card or get a 6800GT.
