    6600GT vs AsusV9999GT/TD

    Hi all,

wondering if i could get some info off you more informed types!!! I've come across this link:

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...ahd_2d037_2dwd

The second item down is a Asus V9999GT/TD GeForce 6800 GT 128MB. I'm currently running the rig in my signature and wanted to have one last gpu upgrade on the AGP path that I'm on. My 9800pro has served me well, but is starting to show its age. I know that probably, the best price/performance card is the 6600gt and I have been looking at these for a while, and they can be picked up for aroung £130.

However, the Asus card in the link is only about £20/£30 more expensive, so what i really want to know is whether or not the Asus card is worth more. I know that it is a throttled down 6800gt with slower memory, but it still has a 256 bit interface and 16 pipelines.

I havent really come across any reviews comparing them, so what do you guys think? I only have a rubbish 17inch monitor, so try to play at 1280x960 as it has my best refresh for a highish resolution. Does the asus also have the overclockability that the 6600gts seem to have? As its the last AGP card i ever hope to buy, i want to to last until i can upgrade to A64.

Or, do you think that i should wait a bit more, as with the new cards coming out, and there not really being anything new to play, wait for the new releases and hope a full 6800gt comes down in price?

    Opinions??? Thanks in advance

id go with the asus. a mate uses it and its essentially a fully unlocked 6800. its about 10-15% faster than my glacier 6800 at stock, but mine catches it up if overlocked as the asus he has is a poor clocker. but even when mines overclocked his is still a little faster (5% ish). if the gap was £50 it wouldnt be worth the extra, but for only £20 more it is a faster card and imo its worth it.

get it. I had it a while ago and it is fast. Mine was a good clocker though (went to 400 core and 900 memory), even at stock it is alot faster than a 6600gt

overclocked I scored 4500 in 3dmark05 with it (thats with a xp3000 cpu as well)

you can find a review here

Thanks for the info YorkieBen, that link to the review hit the spot, as i wanted to see how it fared against the 6600gt. Seems to be a fair bit better, so should be worth a dip, but do you (or anyone else for that matter) think that it will last the next gen of games???

Seeing as it can nicely handle the Doom3 engine and Source pretty well, it might be ok, but i dont want to have an outdated card when something like the next UT comes in. Anyone think that it may be better to wait - prices should surely drop with the 7x00 series just out, but i guess its a special offer already...Hmmm choices!!!! Funny how this always comes up just after pay day!!!

problem of buying for a pc... things are always out of date or soon to be

you will be able to run the next UT etc but not with full eye candy probably. But what ever card you buy less than £150 this will always be the case.

my rig (see sig) plays bf2 at 1280*1024 and 2xAA with 8/10 options at high, only texutres and lighting which are at med. so i think it will do the next gen fine after that or at higher res you may struggle if you want eye candy

    to the OP ......

I bought one last week - when it was - well pleased. Replaced my Geforce Ti4800 128Mb - only reason is Battlefield 2 as is DX9 only. Tried a mates 9600XT but that was worse performaance is CSSource. Works for me as am on a budget -was looking at 9800pro and much better than that.
Only thing about it 128Mb of DDR not DDR3.
This week that have XFX 6800GT, full blown DDR3 256Mb for £40 more - if you have the money that looks a good deal.

On the PCI-E/AGP front, you still have a good upgrade path on the CPU with AGP, so it's not really a consideration unless you were upgrading CPU/Motherboard now.

It has made upgrading a nightmare though... At least DDR-2 hasn't dominated new boards as well.
