    ATI Graphics Cards - Confused

    x800, x800pro, x800xl, x800xt, x800xt pe, x850, x850xt pe

why is it not simple like 6800, 6800gt, 6800 ultra? can anyone tell me what order they rate?

I'm basically after spending around £200 on a graphics card, probably gonna stick with AGP. I'm guessing frm reading other posts that its a straight choice between 6800gt and x800xl, but i've seen 6800 ultras for £230 on ocuk b-grade.

    any opinions?
ps. i know its not gonna be a million times better than my current 6800, but a mate wants to buy it, so i can afford a small upgrade )

    That looks about right.

For 200 squid it's usually either a 6800GT or x800xl. Dabs have a Sapphire x800xt which is faster still for £190 which is the best deal I've found so far here . I'm in the same boat

If you had an NF4 chipset I'd say get the X800XL, but you have NF3 so I think the best card for you is the 6800GT.

I like the X800XL better overall but if you are a gamer the 6800GT is better in most games. If you like 3D benching then maybe the X800XL would suit you better though.

That's absurd. How can one card be better overall, but the other be better for games (assuming similar prices)? Most people buy these cards to play games.

do you reckon its worth going down the ebay route? there seems to be some bargains to be had.

    also, ocuk's b-grade section has gf6800 ultras for £234!

I'll make this easy for you - get the X800XT at £190 from Dabs. It's quieter, less power hungry and smaller than the 6800GT ...wish I'd gone ATI instead of this XFX 6800GT but stock was an issue when I bought mine. I reckon ATI does better AA anyway - Nvidia's AA has improved a lot with with 6xxx series but it's still not quite as good and still takes more of a performance hit when enabled.

ebay = dodgy. Afaik warrentys are not transferable, which is a risk i would not take (even though my warrenty is voided in many ways )

Ocuk - do you really want to risk it? lol.

As for ATIs product range, many of those cards were brought out after and so are improved versions (x800xl, x850*). for example, when originally released, ATI maybe couldnt get good yeilds of any cards at 540mhz core - it was exatly the same with 9700s and 9800's - exactly the same core but improved pcb on the 9800.

    Is this a better card?

    http://www.an24.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=2180

Does the higher number mean its better? If so, why so cheap?

    No it's a Pro.

    Best to worst- XTPE> XT> XL> Pro>

The X800's came out first, the older, and use smaller coolers, but are the same as X850's at the same clock speeds.

The X850's were released later, and have slighty higher clock speeds than the equivelent X800 card, for example an X800XT PE runs at 520/560 and the X850XT PE runs at 540/590.

You can find good deals on X800's and there's less of them around.

i got an AGP X800XL a couple of months ago and I'm very happy with it for gaming. Custom PC mag reckon it performs around the same sort of level as a 6800Ultra in most games, about the same as a 6800GT in others. Dunno what they cost now, mine was about £230 at the time but if XT's and XT PE's can be had for about £200 I'd reckon the XL will be a good bit cheaper (i.e. better value for money) than the higher end cards. Remember, once you get to about that level, it becomes the law of diminishing returns, i.e. you could spend 50% extra cash on a card that only performs 10% better.

The XL is pretty easy to get hold of as well, the top end stuff is rare because so many chips roll out of the fab plant with faults due to being manufactured at extremely tight tolerances.
