As a News Editor, I can safely say that I work more productively with two monitors. Whenever I'm 'on the move' or my main rig is unusable for whatever reason (rebuild, testing, etc) and I'm on my laptop, my work rate slows down as I faff about flicking through the many programs I have to keep running.
Dual monitors isn't a gimmick - you can make good use of them.

I just bought a second monitor, BENQ 8ms 17" TFT (for gaming), and i'll use my 2nd monitor, a Fujitsu-siemens for TV (just bought a DVB tuner).
Did try a dual mon setup, just did not find any real killer use for it and could not justify the cost, space of extra resources. Good for hardcore video/photo editing and flight sims, but not into that.

Just how much extra work does a graphics card put in to run two monitors? I don't want to lose performance during a game just to have iTunes sitting there on the other monitor.
