I do believe its been getting noisier and noisier. saddly they don't seem to sell an arctic silencer for the 6600 AGP version [grrrr] so just wondering what options I might have short of actively applying hammer to spinning fan...

Oil the fan, youd be surprised what a difference it makes. You can get little precision oilers at most model shops, and the hole is usually under the sticker on the top of the fan.
Buy a Zalman VF700-Cu. I have one, it's very quiet and effective at cooling.

two good options. I have some bike oil, I'll try that out and see if it works, then I'll see about going one further and getting a new heatsink/fan arrangement. that zalman is one of the ones I've been looking at recently.

If the card with the stock heatsink doesnt get tooo warm you could reduce the fan speed.
I think the zalman VF700-AlCu/CU will fit.
From pictures of your card I think this zalman will clear all components except maybe the HSI heatsink at the bottom of the card.

A tiny squirt of WD40 is often good.

Yes, the VF700Cu is great.
I forgot to plug the fan in when it was really hot in the UK and so it was basically passive for around a week or so and when I looked at the temperatures it was only at 65 degrees which is cooler than some stock Heatsinks.
which ever cooler you go for if you do, make sure it can allow a little air flow on the hsi heatsink if its an agp card. it doesnt require any cooling at all so ive read but just to make sure, best to have a little air circulation on it.

Did you actually oil it though? Cleaning it will do nothing. but yeah, zalman is good, also watercooling FTW!Originally Posted by shiato storm
couldn't oil the fan, unless I totally stripped the unit down to component parts...I'm not sure oil would have helped as I think its a product of the faster moving ail over the fins rather than the fan rotating making a noise...
