    Power Color X850XT heat query

I've just noticed my X850XT reaches tempretures of upto 80-82 Celsius after 20 minutes of playing Battlefield 2 , 60-62C on idle temp.
i've just realised this after downloading Catalyst 5.6/7 when i got a pop-up warning about it overheating and that its going to reduce the core speed automatically in order to cool it down.

i've got cm wavemaster case, 1 rear exhaust, 1 exhaust at the top and two front intakes. all components running at stock speeds.
do u think somethings wrong or is this completely normal whilst playing games???

    thanks in advance

Crikey, I only have one case fan in my whole system and that runs at only 5 volts which means it hardly spins.

When i forgot to plug my Zalman VF700Cu fan in my temperatures only went up by 6 degrees.

Haven't got a clue why your's is overheating.

Sounds like your using the stock cooler... normal really.

I would recommend you either change the cooler for a arctic cooling silencer which hould have full load temps around 50-60.

If you dont want to do that, its a good idea to manually set the fan speeds with ati tool, so that at 60c it goes upto 100%. At 100% load temp should then be reduced to ~75c.

Both my cards became unstable at ~80-90°c which happened often with the fan speed set by the card.

    You should tick it

It will do is stop your fan from making high pitched nioses at some speeds

if you get a better fan for your ATI card will ATI toll still have control over its speed?

i have the same card but with an arctic silencer 5 on it. It runs at 40 celsius on idle and 55 on full load running counterstrike source.

I thought the X850's were supposed to run cooler than X800's because of the much beefier cooling? It's almost an Arctic Silencer isn't it?

nah i read on some review the x850xt stock cooler was no better than the x800s. i would have got an artic silencer but im selling this as soon as the R520 is released.

Well thats stupid. It's a 2 slot cooler, yet it's no better than a X800 single slot, small cooler.

X850's don't have a higher Voltage either do they?

What was your x800's stock voltage? X850 stock is 1.4, iirc the x800 was 1.35? not enough for a significant increase in heat.

The x800 and x850 coolers are similar design. The dual slot design of the x850 is not a requirment of a bigger heatsink, but instead becuase it uses a blower rather than a axial fan. The x800 uses a low'ish desnity of soldered copper fins, whereas the x850 has a higher density of skivved copper fins.

    Hi All,

I am no expert on the nitty-gritty hardware/cooling stuff...

...but I do know that it is possible to have heating issues if:-

    a) There is too much/little thermal paste between the cooler and the chip

    b) The surfaces of either are very uneven

In either case, the cooling solution will not be pulling as much heat away from the chip as you would like

I am going to ping one of the HEXUS Hierarchy on this cos they are experts in the field of (in)human cooling - hope for an informed posting soon !

The stock cooler is probably fine, just dismantle it, clean it off, and apply some good thermal paste in a proper fashion. I've never seen any mass market video card maker get the thermal interface material right/ideal. I think ATI uses some kind of shinetsu, which is good stuff, but all the X800s I've taken apart (five of them) had too much on, or had air bubles in the TIM. A nice thin layer of AS5 then a small dab in the middle of the die (so it forces out any air as it spreads) knockedabout 10C off of load temperatures on my X800pro flashed to XT.

You may also consider using a utility such as ATItool to force the fan speed to the highest vaule you can tolerate.

More air instake, esp near the bottom of the case should also help.

Corrected it to read "thin", but I think it could have been infered from the rest of the post.
