    6800gt Performance Question

Just wondering In reference to my other thread

    http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.p...186#post519186

I have a shuttle box with only a 220 wat power supply and when I play CS:Source I get around 60-100 fps and sometimes get as low as 40 in big battles.

I even put all my settings on low and 800x600 I should be getting way better frames than this. My drivers are updated on the card version 77.72.

I was just wondering if there was something I need to tweak in the settings or is it the power supply holding me back. If so is thier any alternate power supplies without replacing my whole case (i.e. external power supply) because as far as I can remember shuttle only sells 250 power supplies and they are pricy.

You are in all probability CPU limited. Try upping the resolution/details and turn on some AA/AF. If frame rate does not get much worse, your CPU is holding you back.

Power might be an issue, but I doubt it. Try underclocking the card and undervolting the CPU, if possible. If frame rates improve, power might be the problem.

Your two most power hungry components get nearly all of their power from the +12v rail. What is the +12v amp rating on that PSU?

I upped the resolution to 1024x768 and set everything on high AA 6x and Ant 16x and am still getting constant fps in the 70's-100's.

have you changed the max_fps varible in CS to a higher number as its defaulted to 100.

Change it to about 200 and you will probably get a little increase but 70-100 FPS is highly playable.

To be honest, don't worry about it as I get the same when in SLI mode with 2 x 6800GT with all eye candy on maximum

some games are naturally limited anyway. I think its something to do with the OS controlling FPS.

OS doesn't limit the FPS (2k and on do handle refesh rate differently from earlier OSes). Some games have a limit built in (the battlefield series cannot go above 120 fps for example). Vsych will also limit FPS, of course.

Anyway rjc_013, it's pritty clear that your card is not the limiting factor. Just use the best resolution and AA/AF vlaues that you can maintain a playable FPS at. You will obviously be cpu/memory limited at lower detail settings.

There really doesn't seem to be anything wrong with your system.
