    ATi X800 128MB

I was looking for a 9800 Pro, but also found an X800 128MB for £135. Reviews/benchmarks on the internet seem to be fairly rare, so does anybody here know how well this performs compared to the 9800 Pro (£90) and X800 Pro (£180)? (I know it will (well, should) be faster and slower respectively, but by how much?)

Also, does it suffer much from not having another 128MB?

    Thanks

    Mike

i have the 256 meg version, wouldnt advise getting one.

I got mine basically to replace my 9800pro as I dont have any AGP slots on this PC, it performs slightly better but not much - mebbe 10-20%

My advice is go for the X800XL at the very least, thats a decent enough card 6800GT is even better, or even just a 6800NP

I'm currently biased againt ATI though as i'm pi**sed off at their lack of stereo3D support..but either way there are better cards for not much more money

I have been thinking about getting one of these cards for my next build as I can get it for only a few dollars more than a 9800pro (9800 pro is 137 usd here, the X800 is 145 usd). Hexus has a review of a 256M X800. I would prefer a faster card, but this will just be a hold me over.

I'm surprised that a performance difference was not that noticeable for you, though 20% faster than a 9800pro/xt does seem about right.

The reason I'm looking at a vanilla X800 rather than anything higher is that anything more powerful would probably end up being bottlenecked by my CPU (Mobile Barton 2500+, running at a little over 2ghz). It also happens to be cheaper than the other high end ranges - these are the prices I've seen:

    Plain X800: £135
    Plain 6800: £160
    X800 Pro: £180
    X800XL: £210

As you can see, the X800 is a fair bit cheaper!

those links may be of use

I still wouldnt see going from a 9800pro to X800 an upgrade though, more of a slight sideways step

the 256mb x800 is pretty good, there are versions with 900+mhz ram - this makes a big difference to the performance (Gigabyte and HIS both do overclocked x800s)

Id look at picing up a 6800 instead. 12 Pipes, and can unlock to 16, etc.

I thought I'd seen an overclocked Gigabyte X800 too, but all I can find now is this... Gigabyte X800

    This says 700Mhz RAM

    Don't they advertise the overclock?

You need to be really careful about what you are benchmarking

If you use old games - then they will not be shader intensive

Each shader will only contain a couple of instructions

At that point - you are looking at the raw throughput of (largely) unprocessed pixels

Move to a modern game like Half Life 2 where the shaders are significantly more complex (maybe 5-30 instructions each) and you could see a performance jump (at1280x1024 or 1600x1200 with 4x/8x) of something like 50%

    i.e. a 'bare minimum' 30fps becomes a silky smooth 45fps

Overall, I would suggest waiting about 2 weeks before making a final decision on which card to buy toward the budget end of performance

Does that mean we'll be seeing some new AGP cards in the near future? Or aren't you at liberty to divulge that information? Or are you just trying to confuse us?

Edit: Anything to do with this: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=24776

In that case, I'll just have to put my faith in you... you'd better not be wrong!

I still think the 6800 is a great card for the money.

Or you could try a X800Pro 2nd hand?

If I buy an X800 and solder my own PCI-E power connector on to the board, will it draw power from that connector (if needed), or is the baord missing more than just the 6-pin (extra VMRs)? I haven't found any really detailed pictures of an X800 out there so I can't tell for sure.

It seems to me that the plain X800 provides similar performance for less money, while the X800 Pro is faster for little more money - to me, it doesn't look like a great card for the money!

Show me some benchmarks. I assumed the X800 was pretty slow from specs.
