Assuming you have a padded budget, the Nvidia 7800 GTX is the fastest you can get at the moment. $480 as of today for an OEM card by MSI at newegg.com. There's also the scaled-down 7800 GT which was announced today I believe.

Fastest ATI card is X850 XT Platinum Edition. It has higher clockspeeds but less pipelines, so it's slower than the 7800 GTX. Costs about $400. ATI is launching its R520 card which supports Shader Model 3.0, and Nvidia will probably launch a 7800 Ultra soon after in response to ATI.

Yep, if I were buying a gfx card I would certainly go for nvidia tho - I have an nvidia chipset (nf4) SLI enabled computer and the linux drivers are better.

Otherwise I don't really think theres much in it.

I think Ati is the best. I always buy Ati. I like the drivers and they seem to update the drivers for gaming problems more than Nvidia. Nvidia seems to worry more about benchmarks.
Did you ever think about the name Forceware?

This is in danger of sounding like a fanboy argument but here we go...
I think that is untrue of the Forceware drivers. They always seem to offer a massive (sometimes small) increase in games with every update. I remember the 4.x Catalyst drivers to be the most unstable out there, although they've improved with the 5.x. At the moment nVIDIA have the upper hand because they got the SM3 support that ATI haven't. If you were to wait Ford, you could consider the r520 series, but word has it that nVIDIA will release a later card to better the 520.

Nvidia as you can pick up some very powerful and quite cheap boards.

the guy havent even mention about his budget... you guys can recommend the heavens for him while he's probably looking to spend 150 quid only..

ATI or Nvidia.. its all personal preference if you're not after those ultra high end cards, if you've used ATI and you like it? stick to it.. you really wont lose out much in terms of $ to horsepower.. Enjoyed Nvidia? good for you.. they have lots of choices.. from crappy FX series to uber performance 7 series..

SM3.0 or not.. it stills plays like anything else.. there might be some slight differences, but when you're so busy dodging bullets, who really really cares? As long as the FPS wont give u a headache..

The only thing you need to ask urself... and ur wallet.... Do you like stuff in RED or in GREEN?

I would say Nvidia, although ebuyer can do an x800xl for a nice £190 or so, which is just under 6800gt, simillar performance, but the 6800gt is SLI compatible for the futu
The uber high range and mid range is taken by Nvidia really by the 7800gt(x) and the 6600gt/6800(standard) really.

    AGP or PCIe?

No point in suggesting 7800 or X850 if he's only got AGP!!

If you have a lot of room in your case go for NVidia

If your case is small, or that there isn't much room between the back of the case and a harddrive go for ati

    lol^

Right well here's my little bit of advice (with no budget)

    AGP High End: x850xt PE

AGP Mid-High: x800xt 256mb (or x800 Pro soft modde to XT)

    AGP Mid: 6600GT

PCI-E High End: 7800GTX or slightly less: 7800GT

    PCI-E Mid end: either x850xt 256 or 6800 NU soft-modded to a 6800GT

    PCI-E Mid: 6600GT

There - mix and match to your budget

Need to know - budget and agp / pci.

To be honest you asked a question that gets asked in every tech forum all over. Some people love ati some love nvidia - its like the intel or amd.

personnaly i think amd / nvidia twin well as do intel / ati.

Also what you gonna be doing with the machine ?
