I've noticed the same before on lower power cards, like the 6600. However, I once did the same (I was tired!) with a 6800GT. That card died with what looks like frame buffer damage. Windows booted, but the display was just a jumble of different coloured blocks.
Im surprised it boots
my 9800 (or my motherboard) beeps like crazy when I boot up the pc without the floppy molex in
My 9700pro gave me a warning that it was not connected, I don't know how but I'm glad it did.
The ATi cards test the connector is in during the video BIOS initialisation I don't think NVidia does - but I think their driver usually warns you once booted into Windows and sometimes does things like dropping the clock/mem rates on the card.
yup my 9800pro gave that warning and wdnt boot. was rather annoying at the time because the power cable was obviously plugged in :)
