    gfx molex connectors...necessary?

just wondering cause I accidentally started up without the power cord to my gfx card in and it seemed to work fine. games and all, only noticed it after i'd been using it without for the past couple of days, so why is it there??

I've noticed the same before on lower power cards, like the 6600. However, I once did the same (I was tired!) with a 6800GT. That card died with what looks like frame buffer damage. Windows booted, but the display was just a jumble of different coloured blocks.

My 9700pro gave me a warning that it was not connected, I don't know how but I'm glad it did.

The ATi cards test the connector is in during the video BIOS initialisation I don't think NVidia does - but I think their driver usually warns you once booted into Windows and sometimes does things like dropping the clock/mem rates on the card.
