    6800le Vs 6600GT

After seeing this 6800le for £89.99(inc VAT), i was wondering if anyone here knows how it would compete against a 6600GT?

6600gt will be better than the 6800le, but there is a possibility that the 6800le can have some pipes unlocked, making it into a 6800 nu (12 pipes) or a 6800/gt hybrid (16 pipes)

Did you see/are you ignoring the ones at overclockers for just over £82?

Id go for the 6800le with the intent of trying to unlock it. IF succesful then itd beat a more expensive 6600gt.

x800gt is pci express, hes after an agp card (i assume).

6800le cause it's still 6800 and has higher clocks than 6600gt + the possibility of unlocking 4 pipelines
read more about unlocking these extra pipelines here: http://www.doomedpc.com/drupal-4.5.2/?q=/node/9

It doesn't have a higher clock than the 6600GT... 6800LE has 8 pipes and 256-bit mem interface running at 300/700, 6600GT runs at 500/1000 (900 for AGP) with 8 pipes and 128-bit mem interface. The 6600GT outperforms that 6800LE even with 12 pipes on I think you'll find, it depends what you are doing with it. Given that the clock rate of the 6600GT is 66% faster than the 6800LE which even unlocked to 12 pipes would offer only 50% more pipes. Check first, also the 6800LE sucks up more power and runs hotter.

6600GT is a very good value card and should be better than the LE, regular 6800s on pci-e are minimum £130 but could be considered.

Nope, not true, as with 12 pipes/5 verts (verts will almost definitely unlock) and a very mild o/c it is a 6800, which > 6600GT any day of the week.

You're assuming it will unlock and overclock which isn't a fair assumption to make, because you might get one which won't. Were it me I wouldn't risk it, because out of the box the 6600GT will trash it and that might overclock some as well.

    Ahem.

You said that a 6600GT will outperform an unlocked 6800LE. I said it wouldn't.

I'm not assuming anything, just correcting your misbelief.

Yeah, ok I said unlocked, but it's a close call and the 6600GT's clockspeed does put it at an advantage in some things. I also meant to write 'always a fair assumption to make'.

Anyway, given his system and his 6600GT is at 580/1150, I would say the 6800LE doesn't stand a chance and is not a worthy upgrade. If it were a choice of either I'd probably choose the 6800LE but as an upgrade from a 6600GT, no way.

Overcloked 6600GT will definetly outperform the 6800le.

I would definitely go for 6600GT, and even overclock it a little bit, if needed.

Isn't it only the AGP version that has potential for unlocking? I thought the PCIe version is actually a different design not just a disabled pipeline higher end card.

I think the performance of the two is so close it's probably best to go with the cheapest. In some games the 6600GT is faster, but not in others. Personally given the same price for the two, I'd go with the 6600GT. No real reason (seems a little bit faster in the games I like maybe), but I just have the psycosymatic thought that the GT cards are that little bit higher quality/have better components. They're the higher range of the equivalent chipset.

Although personally using nVidia currently, it looks like the new X800GT is a storming £100-£110 card ! Well worth considering, if early reviews are anything to go by.....

    Correct.

If 3DMark'03 or '05 is worth any grain of salt, I can get up to 10700 and 4500 respectively.

IMO, the X800GT is underpowered and is significantly slower in openGL games, ie, D3, Riddick{and Q4 is openGL}, and isn't crash hot in DX9.
The true 6600GT competitor for PCIe is the X800, but even then, the 6600GT is still faster in D3.

I don't consider any 6800 except the 6800GT as being of any value for money, ie, the 6800LE, NU are overpriced considering their performance, the 6800U is also overpriced considering it's performance compared to either the 6800GT or 7800GT.
