    £50 graphics card?

I've just upgraded my computer, and built a low-end one for my wife (Pentium 4 2.4GHz, 512 Mb PC3200) which is currently using the on board graphics.

I want to upgrade the computers graphical capabilities, but I don't really want to spend more than £50, with £75 being the very top end of the budget.

I am looking at a Radeon 9550 or the NVidia GeForce 6200, something like that. Could I get some input on what would be best in this price bracket?

    Cheers.

Why exactly do you want to upgrade the graphics? Is it just to free up system ram? Theres really no point if its for gaming, since you wont be able to

    That doesnt make sense.

Theres no point if your wife doesnt want to play games.

If she only wants to do email, browse the net, word process etc then onboard graphics are fine.

Otherwise a 6200 will play games at reasonable settings.
BEcause itd be pretty hard to find a card for 50 quid that could cope with any games newer than maybe 2003. So ill change it to, unless you want some old school gaming you wont find anything for 50 quid.

So how much use would the 6200 be? (This year she is mostly playing Evil Genius)

I might just go and spend a little more and swing for a 9800 pro.

I'm not sure what the best card would be, but to play recent games would still be possible - you can get a 9600 Pro, and my plain 9600 still plays all the games I've thrown at it e.g. Battlefield 2, Guild Wars.

£50 seems to be a bit of a grey area in graphics cards...

    £25 = Radeon 9250
    £80 = Radeon 9800 Pro

There's a thread on Hexus somewhere that shows some refurbished Radeon 9700's for about £50 which seem to fit the bill...

The 9600 pro might be worth a look.

They tend to be on the top end of your budget. This is the 256mb version but theres a chance the 128mb version will be faster when at anything but high resolutions.

These are all refurbished but the 9500pro is better then the 9600pro and the 9700pro is much better again.

Consider the X700 (non-Pro) and 6600 (non-GT), these will offer pretty decent performance and around £75; far better value than cards like the 9250(SE) and/or 6200(TC).

If you are happy going second hand, get a second hand 9800Pro, they can be had for about £55-60inc if you look around on the various forums. An absolute bargain considering the performance you get for your money.

PCX? I think you mean PCI-E, PCX is something completely different.

As for the FX5750 for £23, sounds like you paid too much tbh!

I think PCX is part of the name - I'm sure my Leadtek 6600gt had a PCX in it's full model name.
