In many cases, a small range of resolutions or a top resolution of 1280x1024 is a limiting factor in and of itself with high-end video boards. Not being able to push the card to 1600x1200 can effectively cap the performance in some respects since these new cards shine when pushed to high res (with AA and AF at max). This becomes even more the case in SLI mode.Originally Posted by ejgladwin
Having said that, the 6800U may be a better choice in your case. However, many 6800GT cards can be overclocked to and beyond ultra spec with little to virtually no effort.
TBH.. anything above 60fps can hardly be noticed with the naked eye.. 6800GT would be the best buy if you're not going to go pass 1280x1024...

I was thinking that the 7800GT might be a bit more power than I need right now, but I decided that it would be worth spending a little extra now to futureproof myself a bit better. For example, if I changed my monitor and started playing at 1600*1200, when future games which demand much more power are released, etc., etc., I'd be better covered in those situations with a 7800 based card.
fair enough... go for it then... I'll wait till either PCI-E OC boards drop so much below cost or Nvidia or ATi decides to cater some high end AGP cards.. ehehhee

Get a 7800GT or if you want cheaper go for a 6800GT-ULTRA
6800GT Ultra??!?! Which Uncle Ben Apple Barn PC Ghetto made that card?

I would get a 7800GT. You can get a Gigabyte from Dabs for £280 + delivery or Inno3d from lowest on web for the same money. The 7800GT is just as good as the GTX.
Dabs actually have the Inno3D on their site for £269.99 plus delivery, which is what I got. They call it a "DabsValue" card on their site, but it is actually an Inno3D. Comes with Colin McRae Rally 4 as well, which makes a change to the usual FPS you get with cards!
A slight over-exaggeration me thinks, but the 7800GT is a great card and will futureproof you to some extent. That is, to a better extent than most other cards on sale nowOriginally Posted by rajindergill
Honest rajin? 7800GTX will smack a 7800GT back to the stone age.. but we're not commenting on this here now are we? The best value for money at the moment is still a 6800GT, its cheap it runs everything above 60fps at 1280x1024 and will keep you happy with 4xAA 8xaf turned on.
Unless you are buying something for the future, 6800GT is still the best transition card and will happily last you another year on that.
