From what I understand most dead pixels are created during manufacturing, and that its rare to get new ones.

However its also rather obvious that if you insist on poking your screen with a biro, finger, compass point, or throw it round the room in a fit of anger, that your probably gonna cause some

    Midges, eh ?! Worrying thought......

Dead Pixels are generally the result of the manufacturing process and manifest either immediately or within a very short timespan.....as time goes on, there seems to be less of an issue, but still they can appear on any panel from your £100 15" TFT through (my - sob, sob, 2 dead !) 2005FPW to wherever......guess it is just one of those things but it really doesn't mean the end of the world - for me, my 2 only ever seem visible on those rare times when totally black......can't even spot them on the XP desktop !

IIRC, Samsung now have a zero dead pixel policy on all their TFT monitors, so the easiest way to avoid dead pixels is to buy a Samsung! Applies to all monitors bought since the beginning of this year I think

It happened to me once, the little bastard frazzled himself or something because he suddenly stopped moving and he's been in my old monitor for about a year now.

Some retailers (e.g. aria.co.uk) offer a dead pixel check upon purchasing a monitor. That would rule out having *any* dead pixels.

Give it a good shake - that way all the dead pixels fall to the bottom.

Lightbulb give it a massage !

When I bought a Neovo TFT some months back I had three dead pixels around the edge of the screen. They weren't a problem, but being a perfectionist I shearched the web and found out that in some cases it is possible to "massage out" dead pixels. And sure enough after a little massage they are all working fine.
Weard or what ! but it worked.

    Cheers

Most dead pixels appear during manufacture and there's very little you can do about them. If you have some "lazy" pixels (temporarily stuck on a particular colour) then massaging them sometimes helps - but beware, this is exactly the sort of thing that might cause new dead pixels or other damage to your screen.

As long as you don't prod it, though, there's little reason why your screen should develop new dead pixels - plus, developing dead pixels will usually be classed as a fault by the manufacturer, so within the warranty period you'll normally be fine.

well the tft i've got is.. 19" Digimate L-1918 TFT Monitor

i just thought you know you keep changign your desktop every 3-4 weeks or something like with CRT's...so Dead pixels are created by the manafacturer's.... so it's a case of the better the brand, the betetr the quality

I believe "dead pixels" and "stuck pixels" are different. A dead pixel is created at the manufacturer side and a stuck pixel may occur during usage. The latter can be solved by downloading a program that flickers spectrum colours on your screen to get rid of the stuck pixels.
