ATI Crossfire, where the hell is it (maybe the ATI guy knows)?

Just wondering where all the new Crossfire stuff has got to? Maybe the guy from ATI can shed some light? Is it just me, but are nVidia not spanking you all over the shop at the moment?

Not many reviews yet but I reckon hexus have an NDA on them since Tarinder has the board and has had it for a good few days.

I think you can pre-order some Crossfire motherboards now but I have no idea when they will actually ship. No idea as to when the controller cards will be available either.

Benchmarks would be nice to see though,…

    If anyone has linkage,…

After all, if it is wise to buy into Crossfire is at least as import as when it is available to buy into Crossfire,…..IMO,…

ATI goodness is not all that far away. Can't blame them for wanting to hold back on a few things so we get the goodness of 4 or so different types of gfx cards and a whole new way to stick them in a computer all at once

Little point in getting crossfire imo... a 7800xxx or two will be cheaper . Crossfire would have been great if it was realeased alongside nvidia SLI and wasnt restricted to ati mobo chipsets..

Lets hope ati release it before r520...

It MAY not be that much more expensive, but we'll have to wait and see. I doubt many peopl e are in a rush to go out and spend £700 - 800 on 2x 7800GTXs yet , so there's still time.
Also nvidia's SLI is only restricted to nvidia chipsets (there may be a minor exception, but it's not v. good iirc), so it seems reasonable for ATI to only support crossfire on its own chipsets. That said, Nvidia do tend to make better chipsets and have proven that many times with the nforce series, so ATi could do well to allow some sort of integration into other manufacturer's chipsets.

    Hi All,

First up - thanks for your interest in CrossFire - it will not be long now

In terms of time to market, one of our competitors started pushing a dual card solution around 9 months before it was possible to purchase in the shops

Given that our press launch was in June - and we are only now in August...

...then I would say that we have the 'Power of 3' on our side with that one

As far as performance goes, you may have seen the HEXUS interview with John Bruno who is one of our top ASIC engineers

The main picture that accompanied the story was pretty telling

Not sure how many of you noticed, but John had a massive container of LN2 just behind his left shoulder in the that shot...

...a 'statement of intent' if ever I saw one

Public testing of the very best/latest in Xpress 200 chipsets has been a bit thin on the ground - but this is an area that we will be ramping up

Without sourcing it (but I am sure that you will know where it is sourced from)...

...here are some numbers for the fastest Xpress 200 mainboard that I have seen so far

I have put a bunch of disclaimers on the image - so hopefully no one's nose will be put out of joint - but it does show the way that this technology is performing...

...and there is more to come with CrossFire !

Sorry that it has taken longer than some of you would have liked - but we are aiming for a world-class system which accelerates every game in the market - not just a 'handful of selected titles'

Overall, I think that it is safe to file this one under 'Good things to those that wait !'

So basically Crossfire will work with ANY game (current & future), where SLi works with just a few - yes?

For example, Chronicles of Riddick is a TWIMTBP title, but putting the second card in made it go slower (great article written on this subject by James Morris - ex Editor of PC Pro)

Another cracker was a small game called Counter Strike: Source... lucky no one plays that

Even stuff like Unreal Tournament which has been TWIMTBP for as long as I can remember... did not seem to get quicker

At the most basic level, if a customer buys a second £400 graphic card...

...then they are probably not expecting the system to go slower...

...or to have to resort to registry hacks to get anything back

Wow fantastic support from ATi here, that itself is working in ATi's favour for me handing over more cash to them lol

Crossfire is looking good, can't wait for its release to see whats going to happen. Also more primarily looking forward to what kind of power the R520 has got to harness... any info you can exclusively share with us?

Just to be fair and show balance...

...both sides make some cracking hardware and it is getting harder to make a real mistake

However, the shear flexibility of the CrossFire solution should be a major plus point for customers who choose ATI

Also, I think that our description of AA quality is more accurate than most - but that is another story
