Recently purchased an x850 xt pe card which im really impressed with. Apart from the first time I turned it on and a tornado started. (luckily it stopped)
just wondering if the Arctic Cooling Rev.2 ATI 5 (X850 Series) VGA Silencer is much quiter than the reference cooler? and how much cooler it runs? also is it easy to fit? and finally will it void any warranty if i fit it?

Well as far as I know the Artic Silencers are a massive improvement over most standard air cooling on a graphics card. I take it for granted, and I was using a 6800GT recently and realised how quiet mine is.
They are a bit difficult to fit, but depending on your level of experience and expertise, it shouldn't be too hard. It runs quite a lot cooler too, I can overclock my 9800 Pro sky high, but I have no idea on the effects on a X850 XT PE. For the warranty thing, I think it MAY void the warranty as any physical modification would, but I could be wrong.

well i think i will leave it if thats the case.
1. Will run much cooler and quieter.
2. Read the warranty from the manufacturers website before fitting, but I'd say theres a good chance it does void it. Should be straightforward to fit though.
3. ATI cards tend to overclock much less than Nvidia counterparts.
1) get one
2) fit it (10 mins max)
3) if you have an asus card get a fan header extender/adaptor first you'll need to run the new block's fan off a PSU plug.
4) warranty... hmm. Might well void the warranty im afraid, but if you have a good reliable brand name card you shouldnt worry. In a way, its worth it anyway.
should the card fail during the warranty period, removing the cooler and fitting back the stock and sending it back should not be much of a problem, would it?
im curious wheter the manufacturer would open up the cooler to see if anything's been tampered with?
Well.. this could be a problem.. you have removed the stock paste. Check with your manufacturer!
I think in most cases the manufacturer would have no way of knowing if the stock cooler had been removed/replaced. I was chiefly talking about damage done by overheating or by otherwise poor installation of the new replacement cooler. The manufacturer will probably pick up on such things. We all know that some people manage to muck it up and when they do there really isn’t much of a safety net if any at all.
So yes, for experienced knowledgeable users a third party cooling solution is a great way to go. However, for those who don’t know what they are doing it could be a costly mistake.
Also, if you plan on running the card at stock speeds there is little to be gained by upgrading the cooler.
well, for the newer nvidia cards, replacing the stock coolers would greatly reduce the noise produced and that to me is alot gained :P
This is why I'd recommend going for an alternative solution ;) Besides that they are nice coolers
