Whats better for a laptop LCD/TFT? Closing the lid or leaving it on?

My brother has a habit of leaving his laptop on and open overnight with the LCD on, i always thought it was better to close the lid to save the lamp. But not really sure if its a good idea to have the lamp go on and off whenever i step away from it

Well, obviously speakng, opening and closing the lid of the laptop repeatedly because you're board for example won't be doing the lamp or the lid any favours, that said, I probably reduce the lifespan of the bulb or the hinges on the lid by any significant margin.

But anyway, assuming your brother hasn't altered the power saving settings so that the laptop stays on at all regardless of whether it is sitting idle or then the laptop should happily go into hibernation (when battery power is low) or into stanby / sleep mode.

P.S. You may also want to note that closing the lid puts the laptop in stanby mode anyway, also prevents spillages etc.

Leaving the actual LCD ON and running probably isn't the best idea. But I have it switch my screen off after 5mins on my laptop (and set it to only switch the screen off rather than put it into standby when I close the lid).

If hes just leaving it on but the screen will switch off after a little while its probably not a problem.

His screen is set to stay on non-stop, no matter how long you leave it alone.

Hes also disabled standby when he closes the lid.

So does the LCD lamp have a problem with being switched on/off? Or is it just the total number of hours On that counts?

As said about, operating the lid/hinges/switch/light repeatedly wont increase it lifespan, but at same time neather will leaving it on 24/7
    - Its just a matter of balence!
