Why is my X800XT (was PRO) [almost] = 6800GT

Ran 3dmark 05 on my setup of:

    X800XT (unlocked pro) 256MB AGP
    3000+ s754
    1GB DDR PC3200

    yada other stuff

    And got 5627 3Dmarks

    My mate on a 6800GT, with dual channel ram (2x512MB), 3500+ 939

    Got 5667.

I was first suprised at how close they were.

So I just overclocked my GPU/RAM by 20/30 respectively and got:

    5902!

Which is a msssive improvement (imo)

But I was wondering why they were so close originally as i thought the 6800GT were meant to be similar to X850XT?

    X850XT = 6800U
    X800XT = 6800GT
Performance varies for each game, but that's the general way it goes.

    I think I'm right in saying that a 6800GT @ 425x1.14 is overclocked a bit

the X800pro was originally designed to compete with the 6800GT (it didnt) and the X800XT / XTPE with the 6800Ultra.

So id expect your X800XT to beat the 6800GT quite convincingly but i suppose the dual channel ram and the extra grunt of the 3500 is accountable for the result.

The X850's were the revised models, mostly to be easier to produce but ATi slapped some extra Mhz on them and as a result perform slightly higher than their X800 counterparts.

At the risk of being shot...

...you can get different results on different systems when the CPU causes a bottleneck

Graphic cards achieve scores based on the amount of number crunching they do

At some level, they are dependent on how fast the geometry (shapes) is being fed in from the CPU itself

You are pitching a 3000+ against a 3500+ and getting a matching score

It seems that your system is 'chocked' in this benchmark by a lack of fuel

Another thing to consider is the 'DST' option within 3DMark05

As far as I am aware, DST is a proprietary technology created/patented/licensed by nVidia for doing shadows in a 'quick and shifty' fashion

Please note that DST's 'shifty shadows' option is not the cause of the poorer image quality seen with the recent 'Shimmer Drivers' saga

I cannot name one popular game that uses DST (although some might exist - so please post if you know of any) - but the guys at FutureMark decided to include it anyway

Not only did they include it - but they also enabled it by default

At the same time, 3Dc (the ATI-pioneered 'open standard' for texture compression - used in many popular games) was not included at all

To see the effect of the DST 'shift shadows' option on 3DMark05 performance - try turning it off for the 6800GT and see what score you get

We'd love to see the difference - so please report back

BTW: Any green loving folk out there who think this is partisan diatribe should check out Ryszard's initial piece on 3DMark05 here...

    Classic quotes include:-
"Given that 3DMark05 is a benchmark where, ideally, repeatable, equivalent workloads should be performed providing cards are of equal capability, it's a shame to see DST acceleration make it into 3DMark05 as a default choice until such time as it's the case that the feature ships with a majority of hardware. PCF even more so, for visual output reasons too. Their inclusion in the default benchmark of the free download version of 05 means that non-equivalent work is being done when you're comparing cards where one or more of them don't have accelerated DST capability."

ATI's benchmark better on 3DMark05 than the Nvidia range, in real terms performance i think a 6800GT is just as good.

That says that 3DMark05 is optimized for Nvidia.

    Reporting back, SAH!

Right, I was shocked by this:

    He dropped to

    4960

    By disabling DST

*edit* he's just ocing his system and has re-enabled DST.

He just got 5758 on it and is trying for higher
