should i wait for new ATI SM3 cards?

    hey guys,
I was in the process of choosing between an X800 XT and a 6800 GT when i read the articleabout ATi releasing their new SM 3 cards early october. i was wondering should i wait and use a bit of my money to upgrade to a PCIX board and then wait to see the performance of the new ATI cards or do you think the 6800 GT would better then what ATI could have to offer. also do you think the additions that ATI has in store will close the significant gap in performance between ATI and Nvidia in Doom 3? ( and other cards to come)

The next gen ATI card should be very fast.

More than likely it'll cost a few bob more than the 6800GT

These cards are going to be fairly expensive when they are out and hard to get hold off. It seems only 1 card is going to beat the 7800 gtx and thats going to be
a)very expensive and b)very hard to get hold off. I would personally go for a 7800 gtx if you want one now

Wouldnt the release of the new ati card(s) push prices down? Even if he was going to buy a 7800 , they might reduce in price after the r520 comes out, and Nvidia possibly may even release a 7800 ultra version to compete with the r520 dropping the gtx and gt prices.

Yeah, that's exactly what happens. When a new card comes out, it pushes in at the old top card's price, and sliiiides everything else down a notch, although there tends to be some downward creep anyway so it appears like any new top card is priced above the previous one. Just as happens with CPUs.

Wait for R520. If you really need SM3, the lower-end cards will ship first. But generally games don't take advantage of SM3, so if money is more of an issue you should wait for R520 to push prices down and then buy the X800group.

Agree with Aflac. If you've decided to stick with x800 series, better give a look at "ATI clearance center" website section.. good deals there sometimes.

I'd say wait as well. It's only a few more weeks and more prices will prolly come down as well.

Or you could wait for the next card after that - which will have even better performance - or even the one after that....

Well yes you would wait infinitely, but in this case we know it's not long now, and we also know it's going to have to be a fairly big performance increase to match NVidia (or conversly a great price to stay competitive).

yes I would wait to see the peformance of these GPU's, but I think the top ATI cards to rival the 7800gtx are going to be very expensive indeed.
