WIth around a £100 preferred budget, Im looking for a monitor that can nicely handle 1600 x 1400 res for windows and gaming at a nice refresh rate. THe bigger the screen the better, but I dont want to sacrifice good quality for the sake of size.
Any advice?

1600x1400 is sub-std, you will want 1600x1200 surely? In order to use it with Windows you will want at least a 19", even 1280 can be a little squinty on a 17". You will also want 75Hz (preferably 85Hz+) in the res you use for Windows and apps. I seriously doubt you'll find any new 19" monitor capable of 1600x1200 @75Hz+ for any where near £100 ... £140+ is more likely. If your budget is more restricted consider a good 17" or entry level 19" which should both offer 1280x1024 @75Hz+.
If it's mostly for work then you'll want to have flatscreen, almost all new monitors are now. Shadow Mask and Aperture Grill are the 2 main technologies, both equally good. You may also like to consider a TFT if you work in 2D a lot, but expect either to pay a LOT more (17" 1280/1600) or simply twice the price for a 15" (copmparable to a 17" CRT), 1024 is likely to be native though.
