    TFT for Uni

Im off to uni a week wednesday (AHHHHhh) and an having to look into somthing more portable than my (lovely) 19" Samton CRT.

The PC in the other room has a 17" Hyundai Q17 which i dislike, its smaller and pixally, and make highpitched squeals when you scroll pages, and even a bit when you just move the mouse. YUCKY!!

My dad says he will pay for a 18"/19" TFT for me, seeing as im sorting the PC myself.
    - But im worryed im going to spend £250 on somthink im not going to live working at
    - Even the 19" TFT are still only 1280*1024 like the 17"s
    - So do they look even worse and more 'pixaly' ?

What are the best TFTs atm, and how do the compair with the Q17?

If you want to get a higher resolution you will have to go for a 20" TFT, but the 17/18 and 19" will probably all look the same and very nice.
Just go for a well know, or well reviewed one.

Theres a large thread on a certain well known UK E-tailer's forum cough *OC-UK* cough reviewing numerous TFT's. It might be worth having a look there.

if your worried about a 'pixally' display, then maybe spend on a really good 17" as they will have the same resolution as the 19". the differance is in the size of the screen (now that's the contender for obvious statement of the year award) - so each pixel has to be bigger. that said, i have a 19" LG in a budget shell without DVI (L1915S) and have no problems with it at all.

    Arrggg.
    - Well, ive been doing some homework, first thing i cant help but notice is how many diffrent units there are!!

But anyway, i though of though id go with a 17", not sure why, but it sound like a good idea. but then i read that 17" montiers arnt up to much, and id be far better off with a simular priced 19"?

    - The 17" NEC AccuSync 72VM 17" caught my eye and being quite resonably priced?
    - Or the Samsung Syncmaster 173P (17") or the Samsung Syncmaster 913N (19")

What do people think of these, espcially the Nec?

Not seen any CTX LCDs but I've used a few CTX CRTs in the past and they were quite well made budget monitors.

I would have come monday, only we where out, so rung up to perspone the delivery till today.
    - Then rang at 12 today, as it had not come yet, and where told it was on the van and would defontaly be here. It isnt yet.

Im off to uni tommorow, so i'll ring at 8:30 as soon as there callcenter is open and hopefully pick it up from the depot on the way to loughborough. (joy)

    - But if and when i get it i will post a mini-review, and do a pixal test.

Well, it arrived, and im now at uni with it.

Its very nicely built, like all samsungs, and the picture is pritty wicked.
    - It is a bit pixaly, but certainly no more noticable than on our 17" Hyundi at home, no noticable dead pixals, but i'll do full test in few days
    - I havnt used it much yet, or messed with any of the settings, just hooked it up with the DVI and let it figure itsself out.
    - Played half a practice round of UrealTournamet, and it seamed fine, although i'll test it more later.

The only downside is theres a very small area, about 2.5*1cm about a third in from the top right, that is a little darker than the rest, almost just like a finger print on the screen. its perfectly usable, and unless your looking for it you not even notice it.
    - Might give MDirect a rig about it tho, just incase that can sort it for me easly.

    Anyway, gota go, Daniel
