Hi,
I am after a new PCI-E GFX card to replace my 9800Pro in a new rig.
I will be using a 17" TFT at 1280x1024 and mostly for gaming, mainly WoW and upcoming games.
I was thinking about a 7800GT at £240 , but i hear they are noisy?

if you can afford to spend that much then a 7800GT is the best option.
However anything from an X800pro/6800GT is good enough for 1280x1024 easily.
For reference my X800pro (16 pipes) never lifts off the vsync limit (60fps).
Well i usually dont spend more than £180 on a gfx card, and i was looking at the 6800 GT's as they are just under £200 and high end will last me a good time.
But i then saw a 7800GT on special offer at just another £40 so i am in two minds.
Its worth the extra £40 for the extra shader and 4 pixel pipelines... however for those resolutions you prolly wouldnt need it :D
Well in regards to noise the 7800GT is apparently quite on power consumption, so I would think that means less noise.
My Gigabyte 7800GT is quite noisey FWIW.
Although the card it replaced quite literally SCREAMED (Gainward GS2400 6800GT). But then that card came with 2 fans and components that were meant to be overclocked.
As your upgrading form a prev. gen card (9800) then I would recommend the 7800GT as it should offer you the longest life-span. If you can hang on till the end of September/early Oct then there should be some price reductions to combat the arrival of ATi's next generation cards! Either way the 7800GT would make a very nice upgrade, especially if the price is close to that of a 6800GT!

I think the 6800GT will do fine at those RES but at only another £40 go for the 7800GT which i did! great price. To be honest the 7800GT wil be around the £230-£260 mark when the ati is released still. So still a decent price. It kicks the 6800Ultra at only £40 extra! sell some other bits u dont need at home to make up for the extra!! everyone has something to sell hehe :)
oh forgot to mention the 7800GT do easily clock past the GTX version so even better bargain!!
Well I cant really spend over 160, so iv'e decided to go for the 6800gt when the new ATI is released it should be about that price, which is fine for that res gaming! And when my gaming starts getting slower, I can add one more ecause im sli :)
6800GT is prob your best bet. 2nd hand ones can be had for around £150 now so could be worth a look.Quote:
