How long would a 6800gt last me?

    Hey guys,
I am going to get a 6800gt at christmas because I cannot afford a 7800 right now and I play at 1280/1024 res. So I was wondering, how long would it last me on high settings? Even if I had to play on 1024/768 that would be fine. I want to know at the MAXIMUM gameplay settings! I have a SLi MOBO aswell, so I was wonderin when I will have to add a 2nd one to make my performance better!
    thanks guys!

Im getting a 6800gt soon. i would expect it to be still considerd a highish end card for another few months and it should still perform well for maybe another say 2 years? its so hard to predict how long stuff will stay current for it all depends how far the envelope gets pushed by the likes of Nvidia and Ati. If your buying one at xmas they should have come down in price nicely as Ati will release thier new card in a few weeks, so by xmas a 6800gt should be a very decent buy

A 6800GT should last you for a while especially since you can pick one up for under £200.. Try and get a Gainward Golden Sample one as they have a default oc to ultra speeds, which from personal experience rocks

Oh and i was contemplating buying a 7800GT then realised it's not worth it for the 10% increase.

Bear in mind they are hella loud though. As far as making Buying decisions now for christmas, thats just plain crazy, 3 months is ages in graphics card land. how do you know X<insert whatever its getting called this week> wont cost 150 quid? (It wont, but it will definately cause price drops accross the board.)

I have the 6800GT and it runs FEAR with full details, full aa and as @ 1280x1024 smooth as owt, not one bit of graphics lag or stutter. As for them being loud, load of cobblers, I can barely hear mine, although I will admit that the Gainwoods seems to be loud, try the XFX model they are quuiet and fast enough.

How long would it last you? That can be taken in 2 ways - lifetime of the physical card, and lifetime of compatibility with games. Well, if you overclock the thing beyond recognition, theres reason to suspect it will have a shorter life compared to a stock-kept card. If you take good care of a card, you can see then lasting a hell of a long time. Thats why you see old Voodoo cards and Geforce 2s around - becuase they wern't overclocked as seriously as todays cards.

In terms of compatibility towards games and such, the 6800GT should see you through at least 2 years of high-medium performance. Hell - I have a 5200 256mb card which happily plays UT2004, WoW (on working machines), and BF2...yeh ok there isnt the added bonus of 16x AS/AF/AA/HDR blah blah blah...but never the less, it will play away.

I replaced the cooler with an arctic silencer within about 5 mins of receiving it due to the noise of the stock one. The arctic keeps it at ~50C idle and 60-70C Load @420/1150. I 'was' going to upgrade to the 7800 as i said before but since asrock brought out that new mobo with agp and pcie i'm now movign to a64 but keeping mya gp card.

I picked up a XFX 6800GT AGP at a one off special price of £142 inc VAT and Delivery (Mis-priced by Ebuyer). It allowed me to upgrade the Geforce4 4400 for a reasonable price on my second machine. I see this card being able to suitably play games for 2 years. You must remember that the software has to catch up with the 7800 and R520 cards, which will take at least 1 year.

The 6800GT runs smooth today so no real problems. Consider that a 9800Pro card still plays Half Life 2 and Doom 3 reasonably well with a degree of quality turned on at 1280x1024. This only has 8 pipelines.

If you have and AGP motherboard and want to upgrade, this would be a good option round Xmas, would expect a price of £150 all in. At today's prices, if you are buying a PCI-E version, the price differential between a 7800 and 6800GT means you should get the 7800 for the £30 difference.
