As a demonstration that Xfire works and gives decent performance increases I think this is good news (competition is good thing!)

However Xfire for the X8xx series is a waste, considering the cost of nVidias current offerings and the x1800's out in the very near future. Xfired X1800's could be very interesting, especially if the current driver and resolution limits are resolved and x1800 performance is competitive.

Spot on X1800s is the next thing which is important.

This was more of a proof point.

seems to me that ATI's just trying to make a point and also generate a bit of noise and PR before the release of X1800's. can't see any realistic scenario where someone will choose a x800 crossfire set-up at the moment -
- i find the line that ATI only will manufacture the boards and supply them direct to their board partners v.interesting - i suspect they know this is really just a point scoring, rather than a commercial, exercise and want to restrict supply accordingly...

I would have prefered them to "make a point" once that had something to shout about.

Maybe they should have waited for the new card before showing us crossfire because at the moment I am seriously underwhelmed by what I am seeing.

Markham (ON) - Yesterday ATI opened its multi-graphics-processor platform "Crossfire" to the rest of the world by lifting its embargo for reviews. With the reviews, some readers were concerned when they learned that the X8xx series of cards could not display images past a 1600 x 1200 pixel resolution at a refresh rate of 60 Hz. But ATI promises to remove that limitation with its next-generation graphic chip.

This may be true of the current cards but this will not be the way of the future. In discussions with ATI regarding this drawback to the X8xx Crossfire Edition cards they stressed that they could have made the maximum resolution and refresh rates higher but chose not to in order to support current customers.

Why would you be underwhelmed at something that beats the generation that it was designed to beat?

Doesn't seem much in it between crossfire and SLI really. The HL2 result is very poor for ATI, given that's one of their better games generally. Being hammered by SLI at high res is not good.
