    Question Non-Gamer... 128Mb v 256Mb Graphics Card... Worth It?

    A simple question I hope...

Is there is any benefit of having a 256Mb graphics card instead of 128Mb?

The card in question would be either a Nvidia 6600 or 6600GT.

I don't play games but do use Windows MCE along with Adobe Photoshop and Sony Vegas - would these apps run better or take advantage of the extra memory?

    Stick with 128.

It *MIGHT*(1) make a difference in Vista derived OS' as this has a new 3d-enabled graphic model, but right now there's no resolution that will soak up 128, let alone 256meg.

    (1) MS have said 64meg minimum for 'aero' 3d effects in windows - rule of thumb is at least double it so 128 would be preferable.

If the price difference is negligible then i would go for the 256Mb as you never know what you might need in the future. Else, 128 is fine.

Hmm, I don't think apps like those use video ram, I think they're cpu/ram based. Actually yeah they are, because the people who need decent graphics cards use those very expensive matrox cards, not 256Mb over 128mb cards. So just go for the 128

As dangal says, it will help with Vista, but Vista would still run on 128.

If there is not a lot of price diff i would go for the 256mb every time.

    Thanks guys for the advice,

There isn't a lot in it £ wise but I my days of paying a premium for hardware that won't make a significant impact are over.
