Hi
I really like the sound of the
256MB XFX PCI-E *Extreme Edition* GF7800GT *450 Core 1.05Ghz Mem* (256bit) ViVo 2xDVI
but will I really see the benefit of this graphics card
over a 6800 or a 6600 card
when playing the games currently available?
I have read and heard contradictory answers to this question
so I am currently confused

You would probably see quite a considerable difference after using a 6600, but I wouldn't quite justify it for a 6800 (GT or LE?). LE is not a fast card, so you could also buy the 7800. But if you have a 6800GT then I would hold onto it, but performance increase would be there; just not a big jump, thats all.
Depends what res you play at. If its 1280x1024 or lower it wont make a huge difference unless you use loads of AA and AF. If you running a high res panel then it would be nessacary to run the latest games at max settings.
If you've got a monitor that can handle 1600x1200 then hell yes. Shove FEAR on that thing with 1600x1200 full AA/AF and you will some very very smooth but very very nice graphics.
If you've already got a 6800 or thereabouts I don't think upgrading right now is worth it as the card can take care of anything without much trouble. The difference is oticeable but not particularly worth it right now.
It depends on your system too, it may be CPU limited. Also, what games do you play?
ditto with krazy_olie.. if you own a high end 6800 series card.. there is very little point in upgrading.. to fully appreciate the might of these 7 series cards, you will need to ask ursefl..
1. Do I have a 20'' TFT that I can game 1600x1200?
2. Do I have a other components (CPU, RAM etc) that will complement me gaming at 1600s?
3. Do I even LIKE to game at 1600s? (Some ppl don't.. trust me.. I know)
4. Can I afford another 20'' TFT should I decide that I WANT to game at 1600s (if u dun already have one of these overly expensive monitors)
If u can't fulfill any of these 4 questions, chances are your upgrade to 7 series would probably provide mediocre increase in performance..
It makes good sense for ppl with 21'' Iiyamas and 23'' Apples that wants that boost from 30fps to 60+ fps when gaming at 1600s or 1920s to upgrade to a 7 series.. besides, if they can afford these uber monitors.. they will be able to afford a 7 series cards..
we're not trying to say your upgrade will be crap if u have a 754 chip or a low end P4 chip.. if you're really just gaming at 1280x1024.. high end 6800s or X800s are plenty.. even for the coming say 6-8 months..
*need* no, want maybe, my 9600XT is still chugging away with new games in a playable mannor (albeit not with every setting up max).
Well, I am still trying to convince myself that I *need* a 7800GT/X....but have to say that my 6800GT runs HL2, Doom3 etc. fine at default 1680x1050 of my monitor - with plenty of the eye-candy ! Not even really noticed a difference in game with clocking to Ultra speeds (400/1100+) that the card happily does and have recently set the GT back to stock as no need for extra speed !
Still......mmmmmmm, tasty 7800 one day..... ;)
My 6800 Ultra runs pretty smooth at the mo, maybe in 6 months a 7800 will be called for.
my 6600 runs everquest at 1920x1200 just fine.
would probably die in EQ2 tho.

Some say get the 7800
some say they are very expensive and the 6600 is much better value.
I do not know who to beleive ...

they are both right - the 6600 is much better value, and the 7800 is a much better card. Depends what you're playing and whether you can stretch to a better/more expensive card.

If you're running the latest graphically intensive games & you want high framerates with all the whistles & bells turned on, then the 7800 is your boy. If you're running games that don't require 4xAA & 4xAF etc then a 6600 will do you fine.
But get the best card you can for the money you have available. If you have a budget, stick to it.
Why not go for a compromise between the two? A 6600 series card will be outdated pretty soon so it may be good value now but will have to be upgraded relatively soon if you like to play more modern games looking nicely.
Conversely a 7800 series card will make things all fast and lovely for a year or two to come but costs about £150 more than a 6600 series card.
Why not get something inbetween like the x800gto2 from sapphire that is £160 and will unlock and the overclock to x850xtpe standards. This way you get fairly good performance which is excellent value for money.
