    Impact of New Ati card

Just a quick one, With the new Ati card coming out on the 5th. How long do people think it will take to have an effect on the market and force the prices of 7800's and 6800gt's down? Will it be right away or will it take a week or 2? cheers

Cut and paste from OcUK forum by Gibbo, who to be fair as far as OcUK go seems to make decent posts

At the moment its looking like ATI might only match NVIDIA's GTX performance with their X1800 XT SKU's but unfortunately ATI won't be able to deliver stock so allocation will be huge which will make the X1800 XT extremely expensive no doubt a lot more than a 7800 GTX for a product that only performs the same.

So why would NVIDIA drop prices? They are already cheaper, well at OcUK anyway.....perform better........SLi is better than Crossfire so NVIDIA don't need to the fact is 7800 GT's and 7800 GTX's are already at great prices especially considering they are flagship cards.

It is logical to say that because a part isn't available then the competitor's product shouldn't need to drop in price until it does *but*... even if availability is zero, the price will be announced, and it has a "presence" in the market. People will hold off purchasing the existing product and pre-order the new one simply because it's new (this is the silly money end of the market don't forget, new spanglyness seems to matter more than real performance). As demand falls, so must the price to compensate.

The other (more available) models must surely apply pressure on the 6800 models, pushing them to 6600 prices.

To be honest the Nvidia prices are so good at the mo I can't really see them fdropping much more anytime soon. If ATI start selling loads then I assume Nvidia will respond so you'll have to wait and see I guess.

If anything prices might rise. NVidia are lowering prices now to woo customers away from ATI. Once the new cards come out it could go either way - if the ATI cards are killer then NVidia can leave them where they are and gain the price advantage. If they aren't then Nvidia can afford to raise prices.

The 'performance' segment looks interesting though - do NVidia bring out a 7600gt type card, or do they just point at the low prices of the 7800gt and say.. look, for only x amount more you get a WAY faster card.
