Help! ATI X800XL AGP Vs ATI X850 Pro AGP

    Specs:
    P4 2.4 HyperThreading(Northwood)
    1 GB 400 PC 3200 Ram
OnBoard 32MB Vid(Only for the moment)
    Hitachi 120 GB HD
    Motherboard: 8IG1000MK (Seanix)

Ok, I know the X850 Pro has a faster GPU. But it has 12 Pipelines, compared to the X800XL's 16.
I know there is a soft mod out for the X850 Pro, to open the other four pipes, but I'm weary about that. I don't want to screw it up and loose the warrenty.

    Help me out please.

I think they are both pretty similar in performance. I would personally go for the X800XL since I've seen it for cheaper, and it has all 16 pipes.

Besides, assuming you keep that P4, your CPU will probably bottleneck both cards.

The X800 XL has lower bandwidth and higher fill-rate but both have similar performance. The X850 PRO AGP is smaller (good for barebone systems) but the X800 XL AGP is usually cheaper. Since you're not into OC'ing grab the XL. And mike_w is right, you're not going to take full advantage of your new card if you don't upgrade your system as well. A GF 6600GT would be better (performance/price) in this situation.

From a price/perfomance standpoint, northwoods have good OC potential and that's your best bet. You could get a new, costly, higher frequency P4 S478, but still "bottlenecked" for gaming. It's not worth the extra cost. I guess you're not willing to waste anything on an A64 either so the first option is even more appealing and must satisfy your needs. As long as filtes/eyecandys are turned on it's going to be GPU limited in most of the cases. (Eg. 2.4c@ 3.0GHz -> multiplier 12x250=3.0GHz / memory divider at 5:4)

I didn't think the X850 pro would softmod anyway but that may just be be the pci-e version not agp.
