As title really, managed to get hold of an XP2000+ to replace my 1.2GHz Duron, so need the GF4 MX440SE (128MB) upgrading now.
I was thinking Radeon 9600PRO?
Any recommendations?

Aye i think thats the best option, as it supports dx9 and should play most games out decently.
you might get a rad 9700 for that kind of money m8
but if not the 9600 pro is a wise choice
dont go nvidia tho stick with ati
you can buy a 9700 pro on a certain auction site for £169

For new the 9600pro would be the best choice. My mate got one for £117 so it'd leave ya with a bit left over
If you want t go 2nd hand you should be able to get a 9700np for that money or for a little more a 9700pro.
What can I say? It's all been said. 9600PRO is a top card, best current mid-range and a great o/c'er. 9600XT is due out very soon but only really gives you better stock perf, tiny bit extra o/c and HL2 (where?). 9700 even nonPRO is a fantastic card if you can get one, easily faster than 9600XT and often o/c PAST 9700PRO/9800. 9800nonPRO (nonSE) are also worth considering although I don't think they're worth the price they demand, they would be £50 over your current budget.

If it truly is a 9500 that's moddable to a 9700 it is an awesome deal. However I doubt this very much, it's VERY hard to find a 9500 that will mod, you need it to have 128MB and be based on the 9700PCB ... even then you have less than a 50% chance it will mod. 9500 perf is piss poor without 8 pipes ... even 256bitDDR can't save it. 9600PRO for £120ish is a much better idea.
Yeah I think id prefer the 9600PRO.

WWW.MrsBurley.CO.UK now updated
They're out of stock, have been since that thread started. Brand doesn't matter for 9600PRO, some may have slightly quieter cooling while others may have slightly better RAM yielding a slightly better o/c ... no tangible diff. I would avoid Powercolor though, simply well known to cut too many corners too much of the time.
No need to be pro-nVidia nor pro-ATI. Bottom line is that the GF-FX archy is flawed, they aren't awful but are way behind the DX9 Radeon archy in quite a few ways. Not only that but nVidia cards are more expensive than the ATI equivilent. At the moment it is a no-brainer ... if you want top perf and for a decent price get ATI otherwise if you love nVidia too much to stray grab a GF4TI4200 because that's the only sensible nVidia choice given the current state of play. Even if nVidia did release FX5700(ultra) and it offered better speed than 9600XT I'd still point you to ATI as the technology nVidia are currently using is significantly flawed at a low level .... anyway I seriously doubt nVidia's price would come close to matching the 9600XT's.
