Hi, I have £600 to spend on a complete Computer (price needs subtracting to include a £150 17" DELL TFT)
however by taking a quick look on scan and aria etc. I got very confused. Could anyone tell me what the difference is between each X800 Graphics card and why their price ranges from approx £80 to £400 (or more.)

Generally the horsepower goes down like -
x850xtpe > x850xt >x800xl > x850pro > x800pro > x800GTO2 > x800GTO > x800nu > x800GT... x800xt and x800xtpe will be very hard to find as they've been ranked out by the x850 series xts..
These cards differ in their clockspeed.. core and memory type and number of pixel pipes..
The hype at the moment is with the x800GTO2 as these are made from the same core as the x850xt.. they do have a potential to be clocked to the same speed as an x850xtpe for a fraction of the price...
but unless u want to risk overclocking in voiding warranty.. at the moment.. x850xtpe is the best bang for the buck in the ATI range... the new x1800 range is just way way too expensive..
But thats just keeping Nvidia out of the equation (the greens are at the moment offer the best bang for the buck cards).. unless u want to listen to another page of long winded sotry-telling.. I'll leave that for another day.

I need to get a graphics card for a system that will hopefully have a 3.5Ghz Athlon 64 bit processor. For the card I have around £80-£120 to spend.

x800gto is your best bet or a 6600gt
there wont be a retail 3.5Ghz A64 until like say AMD finishes on their 65nm process in Germany...
there will be an Intel EQUIVALENT 3.5Ghz namely 3500+..
for 80-100 quid.. x800GT or 6600GT.. the odds are pretty much with ATI now since x800GT have proven themselves that they could rumble pretty well with the green GTs...
Persoanlly I'd get the x800gto2 ....it's very easy to overclock/flash bios to x850xtpe ...cost about£150 but it's worth it.
but if you're not willing x800gto is the one to go for, it'll almost certainly beat 6600gt in 90% of tests (even the x800gt is generally favoured over the 6600gt).

Why not an X800GT for just £100, surely that's pretty good performance for not too much money?
