    Widescreen TFTs

What options do I have for a widescreen TFT?

Im looking for around 17 to 25".

I have only ever seen the Dell ones. They seem good value for money but surely ther must be others?

    Kind Regards

    Stephen

Does anyone know where HEXUS keep their TFT group tests ?...

Im happy with my Dell 2005FPW...

there are a few 17" ones but i dont see the point over a normal 4:3 17" screen really as most only do 1280x960...

20" widescreen is the smallest Id do unless its a higher-res laptop panel.

The 20" Apple isn't a great deal more than the Dell actually.

i was just going to say that! except when dell have there 30% off deals. if it was full price i'd be getting an apple one instead cos they look nicer and use the exact same panels.

www.rdc.co.uk have refurbed 2005fpws at the moment

by the way, to those that have a widescreen panel what happens when you try and play a game that won't run in widescreen? does it just give you black borders or try and stretch the image?

    From Anandtech
Very few games support 1680x1050 as a resolution (with the exception Half Life 2 and Far Cry), so no matter what you play, you will be playing on a scaled signal. Scaled signals degrade play quality as one pixel becomes stretched or compressed to account for the screen size. Dell has an ace up their sleeve with the ability to unscale the signal and have it display as it truly should in native form in the center of the screen (the Dell 2001FP also did this). Apple's Cinema display does not have the circuitry to do this. Several games support a 1600x900 resolution, which on the Dell 2005FPW, only leaves a few pixels along each side uncropped.

Also have a 2005FPW and highly reccommend it, esp for £350.

The ability to turn off automatic scaling as turkster linked to is an essential feature for any widescreen IMO and immediately removes the equivalent Apple display from your shopping list.

eg, due to system requirements I'm probably going to run FEAR at 1280x1024.

I was after a pair of screens in the 23" to 24" region and basically the shortlist is:

    Apple 23" Cinema £1000
    HP f2304 23" £1000
    Dell 2405FPW 24" £600
    Sony P234/B 23" £1200
    Samsung SM242MP 24" £1300 (TV Tuner)

Others I know of but not much about:

    Samsung 24" TFT
    HP 23" TFT

I spent a while looking at them all, comparing the differences, and in my opinion, the prices are completely correlated to how please one could be with the screens. I am of course crazy enough to have bought two of the Samsung 242MPs this afternoon, so my signature will need an update I appreciate that for most, the Dell's are the best way to go, but if you can afford better, then go better... please!

    ShMeE
    Current: Shuttle SX58J3, i7 950, Corsair 16GB, 2x 1.5TB, XFX 6850 1GB, 3x Samsung 23" 1920x1080, 5760x1080 = AWESOME!

    Laptop: Vaio Z (13.3")
