    Video problem with 6600GT

    Hi,

I've recently bought a XFX 6600gt to replace my older graphics cards, i made the swap and now i'm having problems with video. Any kind of video played will not run, my computer slows and a reset is the only option. I've used ctrl + alt + delete, and moved over to the performance section and my cpu usage shoots up to around 50-60% even when i just highlight a video. I've tried opening them in several players, tried opening diff formats of video, no luck.
Game performance is fine with the card, no other problems but the videos. Only the card has been change, the power is plugged into the card on my board, i have tried several diff power plugs.

    Anyone got any suggestions,

    Thanks, phil.

Did you completely remove the drivers for the previous card?

Also, did you download and install the latest nVidia drivers for the 6600?

Is your PC overclocked at all? I've found sometimes its best to start with default clock speeds when installing new components.

Is it an AGP card? If so, is your PSU up to the job (this probably also counts for a PCI-E card). If you PSU is not able to deliver a consistent current, or there are already lots of things running off it, that would cause problems, however, you would expect to see problems in-game, which you don't....

Can you explain what you mean by "even when i just highlight a video"? Is this in explorerm or in Winam, or WMP or...?

I get the problem about highlighting a video in windows explorer or similar

The only way to beat this is to disable the preview in the view settings for the particular folder etc.

It crashes explorer and it resets desktop etc which gets pretty annoying and sometimes when i closed the window it came up with that it couldnt close the 'active movie window' program, however if you dont have the preview bar on the left, you shouldnt have the problem.

So its not a problem specific to nVIdia then. Sounds like more a Windows XP issue....or maybe a directX problem?

Ok, i've just dissconnected my cd,dvd and floppy drives from the power and still the problem is happening. is there any way i can find out if there is a power shortage.
I've tried the original drivers which came with the card and the newest nvidia one from the site.I removed all the old drivers also before i installed the new card, its a 128mb AGP card, neither the card or my computer is overclock.
When i said i highlight them, if i right click on the clip in explorer, then usuage shoots up to 60%, also it move around up to the twenties when i just open my computer for example.

    completely puzzled,

    Phil.

Well, it sounds like its a more common problem, at least you aren't the only person this affects, judging by MuddyFoxs response.
Have you tried checking Microsoft's support pages?

One other thing: have you checked what programmes are running in the background? If you right click on the task bar, you can select the task manager to view what processes are running and which are consuming resources (apologies if you already knew that..).

Run that, and then click on videos and see if you notice anything odd.

I'm not really sure what to do now, the power supply i have is 450W, that quite alot i thought dont you for me to have power problems?
I closed loads of background stuff in the processes and no change, i think this flucuation in cpu usage is occurring in normal use, but it just gets to high when i open a video, hence slowing down to an almost freeze.

Really missin thid video, no dvd. Music works fine.
