Unhappy Gfx card fan not spinning! - PLEASE help me

    Hi guys,

I am racking my brains over this one and hopefully someone can help me. I have recently got my gfx card back after RMaing it, and put it in my system played a bit of battlefield and got a message saying that the GPU will slow down as temperatures have met an alarming rate.

I thought it was strange and noticed the fan isnt spinning, I have also tried replacing the fan but to no avail, the other fan from my other card doesnt spin either. I have manage to kill my other gfx card as I didnt realise the fan wasn't spinning. I have 2 XFX 6600GT's and now I have fried one of them without realising. I cannot play any 3d games as the temperatures soar. Has any1 got any ideas, could it be a power supply issue, or a MB issue, I have disconnnected everything, i.e Hard disks, so that the power supply isnt under strain.

    I have 2x XFX 6600gtS
    ASUS AN8-SLI deluxe
    1 gig of Ram

    Thanks in advance,

    Steve

my only geuss could be that it could be software stopping it, something like the nividia version of atitool, if there is one. other than that i gauss you have to re-RMA it. Although it may be worth tryingit in a different machinge/ trying a different video card to make sure that its not the PC that has the problem.

Are these fans drawing power from the gfx card itself or from a molex connector?

The 6600GT draws power from a 4-pin molex i think, but as he said he ruled out the PSU ?

I would say these must be PCI-E cards, as he has two of them (i'm guessing for SLI)...?

In which case the cards are non-Molex, drawing their power from the PCI-E bus. It does sound a little as if the fan can't draw enough power to spin up. If other cards have this problem too, then its unlikely to be the card.

    What is your power supply?

I doubt it. It the card works at all, it's got plenty of power for a fan.

The fan is likely just broken. Dobble check that there is power going to the fan it self (unplug it and use a multimeter on the fan power connector on the card's PCB) and if there is, buy new heatsink/fan for the graphics card.

Or, you could just RMA the card, again and again and again....(stock fans on low-mid end cards, esp nvidia reference ones, tend to suck)

I suppose its possible that two cards have malfunctioning fans but not that likely.

skb3, you say you had the card returned after RMA'ing it...did they find a fault, and fix it, or was the card returned because they found it to be functioning properly?
