NVIDIA launches 6800 GS

NVIDIA has today added to it's GeForce 6 line-up with a new model, the 6800 GS. With the top of NVIDIA's new GeForce 7 lineup readily available now, where does the 6800 GS fit in?

Interesting... Somewhere between the 6800 and the 6800 GT. It makes sense to get rid of the ultra now the 7800 series is out. I think I'll either get one of those or an X800 GTO2, depending on its price when it's released (the GS that is). Any recommendations anyone?

I love my 6800GT.. and if I'm ever going to PCI-E.. its definitely going to be a 7800GTX, 6800GS just isn't going to cut it..

EDIT: But its also safe to say that the 6800GS is enuf to seal ATIs upcoming X1600XT coffin.. Beaten before its even hard-launched, man.. this is one of those classic examples of being OWNED!

Reading techreport and anandtech reviews it seems that the perfomance is almost exactly the same as the GT, just more cost efficient. SLI performance looked impressive, anandtech don't like the idea of it as an upgrade path but seems decent to me.

Leadtek model going for £164. Seems like a good deal if it performs close to the GT version. But Leadtek GT only costs £5 more than the XFX GS. Surely it'd be worth spending that extra fiver?

Can't unlock anything on them. They are built as 12 pipes, there is nothing to be unlocked.

Edit:I'd like to see that xfx one reviewed what with 485 mhz core and 1100mhz memory, could be above gt performance seeing as the referance nVidia one was pretty much at gt performance.

I don't think they'll even need 7600GT.. 6800GS has enuf horsepower to smack both X800GTO and X1600XT to the stone age..

But I suppose a 7600GTX or 7600ULTRA should do the trick.. instant X850XT smacking..

It was reasonable to expect a lower end part that went by the name 7600GT but with respect to performance the 6800GS seems like it fits in the category so its just a matter of semantics and nomenclature.

The names 7600GTX or 7600ULTRA are actually conflicting and out of place for a 6600GT replacement. The suffix “GTX” and “Ultra” are more appropriate for high-end parts.

The price is very attractive at $209 (USA) and unless there is a supply issue it may go down.

The nuts and bolts of it all seem to suggest that this will be a very successful part. The 6800GS has a higher default performance level then GTO and it will likely put a hurting on the X1600 series as well.

The 6800GS is also quite formidable even to unlocked and overclocked X800GTO cards that hit X850XT PE speed. In the case of the Sapphire X800GTO2 it is actually cheaper since the GTO2 has been steadily climbing in price. Enough so that I could probably sell my card a profit.

I wouldn’t call the 6800GS an X850XT PE killer (or GTO@540/590/16pp) since its quasi 6800GT performance doesn’t consistently rival the XT PE but it does maintain its warranty where as the GTO@540/590/16pp does not. The 6800GS is most certainly a GTO killer at default speed,…no question.

Yeah, but at the moment it's pricier than an X800XL, and the GTO is considerably cheaper still. If it comes down to GTO prices then cool. The 7600 isn't expected until march anyway.

That actually makes sense since the 6800GS is rumored to stick around only until the first quarter of next year.

Perhaps it is a good idea for some of us to see what nVidia has in store for us then. I want a 6800GS now though.

That being said, the 6800GS is definitely a GTO killer (at default speed with 12pp) and the X800XL doesn’t fair much better.

Given that the 6800GS has a 425MHz clock and 1000MHz MEM it may not OC very well. Since there are no additional pipes to unlock the performance level may be rather static. Still, it’s a great deal at ~$200,….just great,….
