How much difference does tft response time really make?

    Chaps,

I'm looking at these two puppies:

    19" LG L1940B LCD Monitor D-Sub, 1280x1024, 25ms @ £276

    19" Iiyama E481S-B3 Black 1280x1024 700:1 8ms VGA+DVI-D + Speakers @ £273

As you can see, the lg has a response time of 25ms, while Iilyama is 8. If you put them side by side, would you really notice the difference in performance?

I'm thinking of going for the IIyama, but with a slower repsonse time, why is the LG priced higher (albeit by 3 quid)?

    Thanks.

AFAIK the reposnse time has to be ideally as low as possible, to prevent 'ghosting' where a previus image can still be slightly seen over the current one - which can be disorientating in films and games

Ghosting is very particular to the person viewing the screen. Some people see ghosting even with the fastest available panels, others cannot detect it on anything sub 20ms. 25ms is pushing it and I would say even the most tolerant eye is going to see some ghosting.

The Iiyama is the better buy really.

I see you have one, is that the same model as I linked to above?

    Cool
I'm assuming the stand allows for tilting of the monitor?
I was looking at a Hyundai earlier, for 50quid less, not sure whether you can tilt the monitor though.

How would you rate these against Iiyama?

Never tried tilting my screen due to my desk arrangement but am pretty sure I have seen freinds tilt theirs....

As for Iilyama vs Hyhundai.......preferences are personal so you will always get people swaying one way or the other, but IMO, Iilyama are a much better company with a good proven record in screens.

I have sat next to someone running a samsung 913n and looking at it's ghosting gave me a bit of a headache. To be fair it might have been an older panel with a 20-odd ms response rather than the newer 8ms version (or whatever it's at now), but it still hurt. My CRT is still inneed of replacement, but I'm holding out for a more affordable P-MVA panel in a few months time

If you can go down to a pc retailer or a TFT-owning-friend's and watch some fast action scenes on a few tft's.

iiyama replaced (free swap-out warranty) my crt within about 2-3 working days of me reporting the thing as having died (usb fault, probably just a popped fuse, but it was only a week old!)

I'm looking for a new monitor too, from what I've heard and from personal experiance, past 12-16ms its all good, you couldn't see a difference if you tried.

id say anything below 16ms is fine for gaming, in fact the old hydis 20ms was a god as it was superb but that was the exception.

My TFT is 12ms and you can make out a slight bit of ghosting scrolling down web pages very slow but games are perfect, even the really fast ones such as UT2004.

20ms and above really isn't that appropriate if you consider that you are going to game often with it.

I've got a 3 year old 17" Iiyama TFT, it's 25ms but to be honest I don't notice it much, my mate who has sat next me at a LAN said that he could see it from the angle.

I would deffo go for the Iiyama screen though.

Great stuff, thanks for all the replies people, you've all been very helpful

I think I'll go with the Iiyama but first I might pop down the local retailer (pc world for my sins! ) and check out some on display.

    Thanks again.

Iiyama are a good bet - I particularly like the 3 yr on-site warranty.

I've got 2 x E481S-B panels on my main PC and they are the older make with a rated 25ms response time. I really haven't noticed any problems at all whilst gaming.

They do tilt but don't rotate.

I also have a E485S monitor which is trully awful!!! So not everything Iiyama is great but in most cases they are a good buy.
