    7800GT Vs. X1800XL

Which one should i get? The X1800XL is a bit more expensive and a couple of sites i have looked at seem to say they are pretty much equal, although the 7800GT is a tiny bit faster. But is there anything in the feature sets that i should really be looking at? They both support shadder model 3.0 right? But is there anything else. Which one whould you buy?

Well.. X1800XL allows HDR to be enabled together with AA, whilst 7800GT will have to choose between the two. Games like SC:CT and Far Cry will have to hurt.. by a wee bit..

Just in case you want to bring in HL2:LC.. they're using an entirely different method to code HDR.. so both cards will be able to run HDR and AA together in that demo.

The 7800GT destroys the XL at stock. The XL will overclock better, id go for the GT IMO. For an XL, you can spend 20quid more and get a GTX.

So i'm guessing that with HL2:LC being the most recent of those games, future games will also use the (newer?) version of HDR that will run with FSAA on the 7800GT. Right?

Highly possible, but tbh... how many new games that are slated to be released next year actually uses the Source engine? AFAIK, the only game till date other than HL2 that uses Source was some vampire RPG.. which in fact didn't implement it very well.

By any means, its still a valid possibility.. and yea.. 7800GT will smack an X1800XL to the stone age when you add performance/price into the equation. X1800XL isn't really a good way out esp when the cheapestr GTX is like 20-30 quids away... well.. unless you're an advent fanboy..

Vote for the gt here as well.

I try not to think too much about future titles when considering gfx cards - while things in the future may take advantage of HDR+AA, chances are they'll be a card out there that does it a lot better than todays generation anyway.

So today, I would go with the gt. If I wasn't buying today, I'd wait until the end of january for the next revision of cards from ATI.

Oh, I think the 7800gt is quieter/cooler as well, though the XL isn't as bad as the XT.

I'm going to get one in a week or to. It's FEAR that did it. I had most settings on medium with some AA and it played fine. I then, halfway through the game, turned the settings up to max with no AA. I could not believe the difference. The effects in this game are incredible! But no AA does spoil it a quite a bit. In fact it seems way more jagged than any other games i have played without AA. I going to stop playing it and get a new card then start again

I reckon it will be the XFX 7800GT scan do for £250.

I'm also looking at these cards. I have everything sitting next to me apart from the graphics card.

This thread leans towards the 7800GT but I can get the Sapphire 1800XL for £246inc, only £5 more than the Leadtek 7800GT or £10 more than the BFG (out of stock though). Would this make any difference to your opinions?

I pickup up a used 7800GT for 190. Thats also part of it, since your likely to get used 7800GTs at present, as theyv been out for long enough.

Yeah I'd hit up a used GTX like mine

    Click for a sweet card!

Seriously man the GTX's are awesome. Just not as awesome as the 512mb GTX's
