Which TFT (Long time CRT user making the jump)

Well the old CRT is giving up the ghost and looking about I think its time I went to a TFT, problem is I play games mostly on the PC so I need a decent one for gaming. I have come across two that seem to both be getting great reviews. However there is nothing like praise from those that have used them or own them. The two I am looking at are:

    http://www.samsung.com/uk/products/m...Specifications

    and

    http://www.viewsoniceurope.com/UK/Pr...LCDX/VX924.htm

So if anyone has either of these or anyone knows which would be the better option to go for any information would be appreciated.

what you *have* to remember is that reponse times are lies, damned lies, and statistics - never base a TFT purchasing decision on them. Infact, if you look at the specs for those screens, you'll see they have 16.2M colors - that's 6-bit interpolated, or "something that came out of a cat's behind" in technical lingo. a "slower" 16.7M screen will be *FAR* nicer to use, and won't munge all your graphics together into one or two colors. Also, 1280x1024 maximum on a 19" viewable screen is kinda sucky.

Personally, you'd have to sneak up on me with a cricket bat to take my dell 2001fp from me - 1600x1200, full color range, and great for gaming

Is the dell under the 300 quid margin Joe? This is why I was trying to sorce a good CRT instead as that 16.2 million colours thing ircs me a little. I know that the Viewsoic aboce is 3ms grey to grey and anything from 4.8ms - 6.9ms black to white to black according to the reviews and figures I have seen. Unless you know of any 19" CRT that will do 1600x1200 recommended resolution but can go higher. I was looking at the Viewsonic G90FB which does 2048x1600 res but it states a 1280x1024 for flicker free use. As I use a 1600x1200 res desktop at the moment I think it would be a nightmare to drop the res of the desktop. I was really only looking at TFT's as sourcing good CRT's from retailers is harder than winning the lottery these days.

hah, *4* products on ebuyer for CRT? i hadn't realised how things had changed (been on TFT for 4 years).

only a 20" TFT will do 1600x1200 - so if you're looking at 19" screens, you're gonna lose your big desktop. however, remember that's 19" viewable, so you'd gain about an inch from a 19" CRT (which is nice).

personally, i'd save a little longer, and nab the dell - it's over your budget, but not massively so (under 400 at any rate).

Cheers will have a look for that, as I was looking yesterday and it said 0 21". Thats sort of the issue I have atm, I would love the 1600x1200 res of a tft but playing games in 1600x1200 with the details like doom 3, HL2, Quake 4 on the old 6800GT would push the card a bit and struggle but in order to get good gaming out of a tft I would have to drop to a 1280 res. It's a shame the CRT is going the way of the dodo.

My Viewsonic VX912 should arrive any minute. I have always used CRTs, I will let you know how it compares to my 19" Samsung CRT

    Grab another CRT IMO.

Really, there is only 1 reason, IMO to get a LCD, and thats to save space. CRT's are just plain better for gaming. Most reasons people state for getting a LCD, are stupid, like they look better? WTF, so what? they use less power? Gesh the difference is like less than a lightbulb uses.

Like said your gonna need at least a 20.1" LCD for 1600x1200, and then you have to use that res all the time, cause any less looks crap. On a CRT, you can go lower if needed when your GT starts to struggle a tad.

Not to mention you can get a 21"CRT for a lot less.

Ive got a 19" NEC/Mitsi 930SB black, it's gorgeous, one of my best buys, 1600x1200@85hz for gaming. Try and find that on a LCD that doesn't cost you a kidney. Ghosting is not a issue, and it's a nice heater in winter.

Also the fact, black on LCD's is no where near as good. Play Doom 3 on a LCD and quality CRT.
