    R9800PRO Problems - BSOD (ati2dvag)... Help!

    Hello,

Right well my sisters computer has been having some problems, specs are as follows:

    3000+ Venice using Retail HSF
    Asus AV8 Deluxe
    2 x 512mb Corsair DDR400 in Dual Channel
    Sapphire R9800Pro
Western Digital WD800JD 80Gb SATA Hard Drive
Antec True Power 430W Power Supply
    anything else just ask...

These problems started mainly with the playing of Age of Empires 3, basically randomly (but only every few days) the graphics go completely garbled (which I've yet to get a photo of) and you see this BSOD error message:

From what I've found searching for solutions to this problem, ati2dvag seems to be driver related so the first thing I did was to uninstall the driver. Reboot into safe mode and ran driver cleaner, I then installed fresh drivers (the latest version from ATI's site). The problem happened again this morning.

Fastwrites are off and it's in AGP 8x mode.

So my questions are has anyone had this problem and managed to sort it? How did you do it?

My next question is, would this be the sort of error that happens if the card is overheating? As that did cross my mind.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

    Regards,

    Mark

Is it possible it's overheating? I ran ATI Tools artifact scanner while having Asus Pc Probe up, after about 5-10 minutes it started to detect problems. The temps in Asus Pc Probe when up quite a bit, so I decided to install one of those PCI Plate extractors below the graphics card. It didn't seem to have any effect though and sadly because it's a 9800Pro there is no onboard temp probe. I'm thinking that the HSF may be on its way out or it's just not up to the job.

Has anyone experienced a BSOD when a card was defiantly overheating?

When I overclock my card too much, it will BSOD with that exact same message. I'm thinking your card may be dying. Try cleaning the HSF and also you can try and get an Arctic Cooler, that'll bring the temps down and prolong the life of your card.

Right so it could well be heat or like you say the card is on it's way out!

Going to have a better look tomorrow on the table where I can check out a few things easier while it's running.

See my "Looking to replace X800 XT PCI-E card - recommendations?" thread. I get the same error with an X800 XT card (PCI-E). I've tried the final recommendation of replacing the Catalyst drivers with Omega drivers but get the same BSOD's.

    The card is probably knackered.

Well I've had numerous suggestions of things it could be, motherboard settings, overheating, onboard sound problems so I'll try those first. But like you say there is a possibility that the card is knackered.

Have you tried taking the side of the case off and having a desk fan blow on the card while you are using it? If that works, then its heat related.
You might also want to check that the heatsink/fan is still seated correctly - how hot is the heatsink? If it ain't hot then it might not be on properly.

If the card has been working without problem for a while, and you've changed nothing, its likely the card has developed a fault, or is overheating.

You've most likely got a corrupted video driver. Ensure VPU recover is off and re-install drivers- use drivercleaner3 to remove all previous installs.

If it continues, clock the card down and see if it that solves the issue - if it does you know the card is having issues at stock. Remove the heatsink, clean, apply thermal paste and heatsink and try again.

Yeah I planned on doing the fan thingy anyways but thanks for reminding me!

As mentioned I did try that.

Right well yesterday I tried a few things, first I ran ATI Tools artifact scanner which picked up artifacts in about 5-10 minutes. I then changed the AGP speed to 4x and ran the test, again artifacts in about 5-10 minutes. I disabled onboard sound and again the test found artifacts in about 5-10 minutes. While running the last test I removed the side panel and although the test continued to find artifacts I did notice more time between each one, I then turned on the extractor fan below the card and again there was more time between each artifact found. So I rebooted, changing the BIOS options back to what they were, I then pointed a large desk fan at the card and turned it on full blast, there were zero artifacts found for the duration of the test. So after that I'm pretty sure it's heat.

I changed the rubbish stock cooling on the graphics card with a Zalman VF700-Cu which I had spare. I then ran the artifact scanner for 1 hour with no artifacts found, because where I was working on the pc was much colder than where the pc normally lives I moved it back upstairs. I then ran the test again for another hour and again no artifacts were found. Which all points towards the problem being fixed, but until my sister has played on AOE3 for a couple of days I can't be sure the error has gone for good, but "touch wood" it has.

Can you let us know how it goes? My 9800Pro errors when I play GPU intensive games as well. I'm fairly positive that its heat as it crashed less often with the side off.

I solved it by buying a 7800GTX SLI rig but if shoving a new heatsink on the 9800 stops it crashing I'll do that so I can run games on it as well. Its been delegated to surfing and storage duties at the mo.

Will do, in the mean while try ati tools artifact scanner. Seem what happens when you try the things I tried, desk fan etc.

Cool, I've bought a Zalman 7700? GPU cooler which I haven't got round to fitting yet, but will do now it looks like it could help.
