ATI is in deep ****if that thing performance is equivalent to the X1800XL, and is cheaper.
Yup could see someone like xfx doing a guaranteed unlock or something.
Nvidia are going all out to win the mid range battle, I bought a gto2 but would rather have got a Nvidia because of previous trouble I have had with ati but the cards that are coming out now from Nvidia are just squeesing Ati out of the mid range price bracket. If the 7800gs is as good as it sounds ati's takings are in for a bit of a dip i would think, maybe they will learn its not always about speed, bang for buck comes pretty high on most peoples lists as well
HOoooh yeah.. ATIs in DEEAAAPPP ****...
Would be nice if they'd bring out a 7800GS AGP for goodness sake.. I don't need a 7800GT anymore.. at least give me a 780)GS on AGP... *sniff, sob*
how do they do compared to the 7800GT's ??
they are smack in between the 6800gs and a 7800 gt, but like ati did with x800gto2 it looks like they have made use of the best cores they can to build the cards so in theory it may mean we have a Nvidia card that supports SM3.0 and overclocks really really well maybe up to 7800gt and above. interesting times for graphics cards at the moment
Well, we'll probably see the R580 based ATI stuff come out at a similar time as the 7800gs.. then we'll see whose laughing :p
Nvidia are probably going to sit on this one a while - they play the market excellently to maximise their margins - there was talk of up to 40% margins expected which makes me actually consider a game console as better value for once.
After the 6800gs has been stopped, they will probably release the 7800gs next year and keep the prices high - suddenly we're paying what we would have paid for an absolute top range card a few years ago, for a middle-low range card today.
The only hope is the R580 based products from ATI. If yeilds are as good as rumoured, they may be able to steal in at a lower price and force NVidia to respond. But I suspect ATI will just go for higher margins as well and rely on chipset performance/brand loyalty to keep market share. But it'll be interesting to see how something like an X1700XT fares against the 7800gs, assuming ATI don't cripple the texture units again.
It's not just that nVidia are "playing the market". They're actually delivering as well, which is an area that ATI have been struggling with. It's good to see that nVidia are not just resting on their laurels, and have learnt from their GF5xxx experience. Shame that ATI haven't done the same.
I'm an nVidia fan, but would like to see ATI be right up there as the competition can only be beneficial to the consumer.
Well yes - my laughing comment was a tongue-in-cheek thing ;)
But I think it's probably true that NVidia have only been delivering quite so precisely as a by-product of the R520 fiasco - that gave them such an advantage that they could afford to do that and thus heap coals on ATI. By playing the market I really mean in regard to high prices.
In the normal scheme of things the 7800gs would probably be 'released' now already, but not available. While NVidia are competitor-less they can afford to wait. I think ATI are also waiting this time around as well - for them to 'release' the R580 based products now would kill off any chance of getting through the R520 stock. But rather than slow down development on the R580 I think there will be a much shorter time between release and availablity.
All in all the start of next year looks to be a very interesting time. But now is quite interesting too regarding value for money with both companies releasing re-binned parts cheaply in the run up to Christmas. I don't hold much hope this will be a habit.
But I do think the time between release and availability for the next ATI part will be the lowest we've seen from ATI (NVidia can't get any lower). But if ATI catch up, I fear both companies will stretch back to seperate release and availabilities.
All I have to say is please be careful out there people, I would feel really bad if I trampled all over someone in my mad dash to procure one of these babies on its release date:devilish:
My advice, on said day, just keep you kids at home, mind the pets and for heaven sake don’t let ma and pa go for a stroll,….safety first people, safety first!!!
Looks like the card to have for bang/$$ 7 series.
Was holding out till the GT price dropped anyway, so this might be a better option :)
I'd like to know more about these. A friend is upgrading and I was pointing him towards a sapphire gto squared but for the same price this looks better.
Well this card probably won't be out for a while, though it would be filling a gap in the market they would probably wan't to get rid of most of the 6800gs cards before this comes out.
