How does X360 graphics compare with thing we have on PC nowadays? Any thoughts?

    Well, as topic..

I've been able to try out on a street demo version of the Xbox 360 off at Dixons, and TBH.. I don't find them to be anymore spectacular than games on the PC. I mean, the COD2 is all sweet and good.. and they've retained most if not all of the goody bling bling effects from the PC version.. but man, arent those characters low res! I mean, the jagginess are like so over the scale. (for example, the german coast cannon over at the beach like the PC demo looks more like a hack saw than a cannon.. its as if they're running 800x600).

Well, to say the least.. I'm not very impressed with the gfx, I would have thought a custom designed chip from ATI would be able to bring console gfx up to at least a high-mid range PC standard. I feel as if my crusty old 6800GT on AGP can do higher res on the same detail level than that the Xbox360. Havent tried out their NFSMW yet.. but I would assume they're going to be roughly the same...

    Any thoughts?

I've had a look and well: F.E.A.R. looks far better when I'm playing it at 1680 x 1050 at max details

Do they have F.E.A.R on the X360? And man.. I cant even get a decent FPS on 1280x1024 with 4xAA on my 6800GT @ + Ultra clock...

But COD2 looks much better on my 6800GT, that I could vouch.. cant get that hacksaw cannon out of my head..

Yeah, COD2 is better looking graphically on a medium to top-end PC than an Xbox 360, even on a HD-TV. Also, as PC format stated quite correctly, just look at the demo of the new farcry engine to see how PC's are going to wipe the floor with these next-gen consoles. But to be fair it's early days and games won't be taking full advantange of the Xbox360's graphics powers for a while yet.

BTW, I hope this does not turn into yet another pointless PC Vs Console thread. We all know the pro's and con's etc.

Yeah know what ya mean. I think its just on people's 1st impressions. Mine was: "great for a console". But thats it really. I was actually expecting to be totally blown away by it

Yeah based on the myth that F.E.A.R shouldnt be played at anything above 1152...and the performance of go6800 I wouldn't of thought that 1680*1050 would be playable...having just upgraded to AMD4000, 2gig XMS pro, and a 7800gtx I found out that it really does perform excellently at this resolution (had to edit the config file to access it tho )...

IMO 360 has a great amount of potential in it, just think what the Playstation 2 started out as ... and now coming to the final stretch its running games with the graphical quality of God of War and Resident Evil 4...that said, regardless of what 360 may be capable of...considering the problems with crashes, scratched discs, overheating etc... might aswell by a PC and crash in style

Not to mention that dedicated physics processors are on their way for PC's. they well revolutionise gaming if what i have read is correct. Might be a while yet, but they will be around well before the next-next-gen of consoles comes out.

Heard they've been pushed back till early 2006.. If i remembered correctly..

and ditto with Kempez, its just 'cool.. a console can do this TOO'.. and not 'awww man.. £300 for my flimsy GTX down the drain'..

    Was expecting tons more TBH...

The XBox 360 graphics is probably somewhat similar to ATI's next gen gfx cards, but a direct comparison is tricky - the XBox gfx has 10mb of embedded DRam, and a decent connection to the system ram. But on the other hand it has to share the system ram with, well, the system

Having a multi pipeline that can do vertex or pixel shading sounds cool, and isn't something we have on the PC yet.

Even when (and it is when) a PC's gfx card suprasses the Xbox 360's, using that power is another matter - the PC's multi-component variety always means that solutions tend to compromise a bit, but that isn't the case for the 360. So by the time PCs have more powerful cards, the 360 programming will make use of it's power more efficiently.

I think that because the Xbox360 was built for brute power, it is far more powerful at graphics processing than our current PC's. We have yet to see games that run smooth at high detail on a 360, that require our PC's to upgrade again, but my guess is that it's coming

Can't really compare, theoretically it's probably better than anything out but it will take a while for it do be used properly.

TBH I don't know the details of the consoles etc. I have had a few and enjoyed them.

To me it is all about what developers do with any power they are given. There were so many complaints about the PS2 when it came out about being hard to develop for, and I supose the new physx cards will be the same.

For me the console vs PC thing is redundant anyway, and this thread ain't about that.

I currently run a Gainward Nvidia 5700U GS 960 128mb. At one time I was playing call of duty on the Xbox and the developers had obviously pushed it out quick. I then bought PCZone and tried HL2 Demo - a thing of true beauty! It showed me what can be acheived when developers are skilled and are given time and budget.

Since then I play PC Games - first FPS was FarCry. Wouldn't rule out a console buy... but with Sky+ in the living room the wife tends to use the lovely telly (she complained about me buying) more than I do for watching movies.

Powerful or not, X360 didnt really gave me that much of a WOW factor.. Probably its just a new system with too much power but too little ppl that knows how to use it.

Playstation 3 would be interesting... well.. it will be if they'd make it appear next year and not the turn of the next century. The MGS4 tech demo really gave me the WOW factor, and so did UT2004... From what we've seen in MGS4.. I'm beginning to believe that the Killzone 2 video was actually rendered rather than just an FMV..

But straight up.. COD2 on X360 was not as convincing as I'd hoped it to be... Lets hope games like PGR would change my mind..
