Problems with DivX playback in WM Player with nVidia card

I recently swapped out my ATi X800 XT and replaced it with an nVidia 7800GT card. The system is now very stable and I haven't had a single crash. The card is also much faster than the X800 XT. All well and good...but...

DVD playback and DivX playback is below par for some reason on my PC's screen. This wasn't the case with the X800 XT.

With DVD's I get fairly poor picture quality and with DivX through Windows Media Player I get a washed out, grainy picture with coloured transluscent horizontal bands across the screen.

DivX via the DivX Player is fine, if a little grainy.

I have heard about something called Purevideo for nVidia cards. Do I need this to get decent movie playback?

Try the 30 day trial of the nvDVD decoder from Nvidia and see if this improves the image quality

its a known issue on 6800s certainly, you want to go into the advanced display properties, then play around with color correction for the overlay mode.

In case this helps anyone out, I tracked my problem down to the following.

The latest nVidia drivers (I have version 81.95) patch Windows Media Player to enable hardware acceleration of video. The latest DivX codecs (version 6.0.x) are not compatible with this. Hence, if you watch a DivX movie through Windows Media Player (using the 6.0.x DivX codecs), you will get what is essentially a black and white picture.

All other movie types (i.e. non-DivX movies) play fine. To overcome the issue with DivX movies you need to use the DivX Player.

Okay, I posted this thread a few weeks ago and the problem has now been resolved :)

I downloaded the latest DivX codec (version 6.1) and the latest nVidia display drivers (version 81.98).

You then need to configure the DivX codec using the 'Decoder Configuration Utility'. Make the following changes:

• Deselect (untick) 'Output YUV 4:2:0 when supported'
• Select (tick) 'Use advanced hardware overlay'

Then you'll be able to playback DivX movies in Windows Media Player properly (without loss of colour or colour shift) :) I hope this helps someone out.
