Why not a Dell TV for my monitor?

    Hey guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my 2001FP to the 2405FPW... but I can't help noticing a very nice 26" Dell LCD TV is less than half price! My friend tells me these can be used just fine as a monitor...

Whats to stop me? What are the pro's and con's of the monitor over larger and cheaper TV.

    Mikmo

It's just that picture won't seem as crisp as a PC-Based TFT would seem. I think the Dell 26" is only 720p Compatible? In that case it has no bigger resolution by 1280x720 or whatever it is (someone correct me on that, I have no idea). The 24" Dell 2405FPW has a native resolution of 1920x1280 or something (lol correct me again), which is a far higher resolution. And since the TV is slightly bigger, you may notice you will have quite large writing, and perhaps blurry edges. BUT it will probably look better on games.

You do know that both the 2005FPW and 2405FPW are HD compatible (with the HDMI>DVI connectors I think, not sure) and the 2405FPW is 1080i compatible, which is higher than what I assume of the 26" Dell. And they both support Picture-In-Picture, which I use quite a bit too

    The TV is 1280 x 768.
    The monitor is 1920x1200.

There's your answer as to why it's half the price.

So for movies and games it would be better but not desktop etc?

Can anyone direct me to somewhere that explains / illustrates with screen shots the diffrence between resolutions. Can't get my head around how a bigger screen is worse.

The LCD TV has lower resolutions than 2405FPW. It can be used as a pc monitor but the quality wont be the same as a 2405FPW.

    Ok just imagine this,

You have 1920x1200 tiles to make a picture within a 24" screen. So each tile/pixel is very small, which means images appear really crisp and accurate. Then compare that to a larger 26" Screen, to keep the accuracy of the 24" you would need at least 1920x1200 pixels PLUS an additional 2" worth of pixels more. But the 26" screen only has 1280x768 so pixels to make up the screen - which are far bigger, meaning bigger jagged edges, the text size increases, etc etc. Computer monitors need far smaller pixels for real world use, and my old 17" screen had a bigger resolution than 1280x768 for perspective.
