    Opinions On Powercolor 9800 Pro

I'm just about to purchase a 128Mb Powercolor 9800Pro and wanted to know if any one had any opinions on it, and any reviews would be greatly apreciated. Thanks very much!

Powercolor are the only Radeon manu I hear to consistently to avoid. However with a top end card like the 9800PRO I can't see how you'd go wrong, top card too. I would rec one from Sapphire or Connect3D as they commonly o/c very well but hey you'll be so fast with a stock 9800PRO I doubt you'd even need to bother. I'd expect it to be 12 months before anything gets close to pushing the 9800PRO and it would make sense to keep your warranty valid until then.

powercolour cards come overclocked as standard, they're good cards, just not as good a name as sapphire or crucial

Thanx Austin, normally I would get a Hercules 9800 Pro instead but im mangaing to get this card for £250, and he only has a powercolor, so its either pay £30 extra for a Hercules, or be happy with this one, I think you know the right choice .

Yeah, I wouldn't go mad over getting a Sapphire or one of the other better makes, but given the choice I'd take my Sapphire 9800pro over a Power Color version.

Its not that important, and I'm sure any make of 9800pro will be the mutts nuts.

I would pay £10 more for the crucial of the crucial site, as it ive heard nothing but good things about these and heard a few probs with powercolor.

i would buy the best one, based on mem chips used, price, known problems (for example gainward 4200 capacitor problem), and overclockablility (depnds mainly on mem chips, as theres no way to pridict max core)
.'. i would defnalty get a sapphire, alhtough it would depend on mem chips, my sapphire 9700np probably has the worst mem chips useable on a 9700np, but i doubt hteyd use infinion ones for many other cards.

i hate crucial in evryway, would never buy there ram, gfx cards or other products, however i would use them if given to me freely, and i wouldnt hesitate to steal fromt ehm if i had the opertuninty and no chance of getting caught

I've read the best 9800pro when o/c'd is the connect3d version, 425mhz core and 714mhz ram is damn impressive, not the most expensive either

Powercolor are well known for using the slowest RAM possible to meet the card's spec and as such you aren't likely to get much of an o/c. Steer clear of their bottom end as that's where they've been known to use 64bitDDR (vs 128bitDDR) or very slow clock speeds in the past.

As |SilentDeath| says even with a well known manu like Sapphire you aren't guaranteed good RAM for o/c'ing and the core is pretty random and cooling pretty std anyway. So long as you stay away from Crucial's low end gfx cards (awful) you should find them of absolute top quality and with a great warranty & free P&P too. I have also heard that Connect3D are great cards esp for o/c'ing. When you're dealing with these top end cards the default/stock speed should be virtually identical and any 9800PRO is an absolute beast of a card, you can't really go wrong. Do consider the Rad9800 though as that could save you £20-50ish, stock perf is pretty close and when o/c'ed it shoudl be as good as most o/c'ed 9800PRO anyway.

    Hello

I 've also ordered a powercolor radeon 9800 pro. I've heard mixed things about them. one version apparently ships with 2.86ns ram, the other with 2.0ns ram however at the end of the day they run at radeon 9800 pro clocks so whats that 380core 340mem or something like that.

The reason i got it was simple, sapphire, hercules etc. 9800 pros cost about 300-320 euro here

www.komplett.ie also available in sterling here www.komplett.co.uk

powercolor's non pro cost 306 euro while the pro version cost only 320 euro. So effectively i'm getting a 9800 pro for non pro prices so as far as i was concerned overclockable or not i was getting a bargain and saving about 80-100 euro.

Knoxville who told u powercolors come overclocked as standard cause the few 9800pro versions ive come across dont.

another thing, u should EXPECT an overclock of about 420/360 this is an average overclock because ive delt with 4 or 5 and they all made this. You also cant make assumptions about "the best make" there is none overclock wise, luck of the draw but id say the ati oem's generally tend to give best results.
