much better than the 5950 but not as good as some cards for £150.

Such as the Nvidia 6800GT or GS (both roughly the same)

The ATi alternative to the GT/GS is the X800XL which seems to be a fair bit more expensive.

EDIT: Sorry to possibly insult your intelligence but you have got a PCI-E motherboard havent you?

So if I could get one of these, or a 6800GS for the same price, the Nvidia would be better ?

yes the 6800GS is better. Google for a few reviews, basically the X850pro is the same or a bit worse than the X800XL which the 6800GS is often compared to.

    Heres some numbers for you

    BF2
    6800GS - 49.1
    X800XL - 43.2

    Fear
    6800GS - 40
    X800XL - 35

Then Doom3 naturally shows a huge bonus for the 6800GS (18fps) and Half Life 2 shows 3fps advantage for the X800XL.

All these tests are at 1280x1024 btw.

as noni said i beliee most of these unlock to xtpe which is much better than the 6800gs in direct x and slightly better [I think] in open GL. So it is up to you to decide on the risk, I expect someone will be around later who knows the succes rate and can tell you deatails about the unlock

the ones that unlocked to X800XTPE were the early X800pro VIVO's on AGP (note: i have one )

The PCI-E versions never unlocked at all, neither did the non-vivo's unless you were handy with some conductive paint. Not sure about the X850's but i think they were made after ATi got wise to this and hardware locked the pipes.

As much as it pains me, OCUK do a X850XT for 150quid http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...CI_Series.html PCI-E. Thats an awesome price, and better than anything Nvidia, except the 7800 series.

^ thats a super price - my bro is in the same boat - looking for a gfx card @ £150 - it's a difficult price because it's inbetween price brackets, thats certainly the best option I have seen so far.
