I personally have not done this, but when I install the Omega drivers they have option for softmodding 9800SE to P/NP... check it out.

There is, at best, about a 40-50% chance of successfully softmodding.

Some good threads on tekforums regarding this.

I'd say your chances of successfully modding all 8 pipes without artifacts is 10% at absolute best. Main reason for the 9800SE (which give 9600PRO/XT perf) is to use up the 9800's which had some defective pipes, otherwise they'd be sold as 9800/PRO. Also watch out as there's 2 types of 9800SE, one with 128bitDDR that's slower than 9600PRO and one with 256bitDDR which is around 9600XT speed. The 9600 series makes more sense as they're cheaper, cooler, more o/c'able and you know what you're going to get. If you choose 9800SE you're taking a big gamble, you may even find a 2nd hand 9500PRO or 9700 for less than a 256bitDDR 9800SE.

Is it the 9800se AIW (all in wonder)?

The link is a bit confusing.

But current discussion on Tekforums is showing roughly a 40-50% success in softmods on 9800se AIW's.

Power Color has a radeon 9800se with 8 pipelines ( i believe ) and its 256bit ... but know that i think about it its 239USD... just under the 9700pro which is 250USD. I hate to keep running this question into the ground but i want to spend about 250 but get the best card i can ( nvidia is out of the questions, their cards are to big ) so i just keep looking at info and prices.

some soft mod - some dont

but still a normal 9800 pro will do it flawlessly when the softmods seen to have artifacts even if they mod well

mind you AIW9800pro for 130 quid - is nice

evildoc614 a 9800SE (the 256bitDDR one) with 8 pipes is actually a TRUE 100% Rad9800PRO, I doubt you can expect any manu to sell you one of those. You'll have to soft mod it yourself or try buying from a seller who guarantees a softmod. From what I'd heard many mods that seem to work end up failing under DX9 stress tests. Come on man, either take the plunge or wait forever

yeah, a 9800SE np is basically a pro with 4 pipelines enabled outta 8 (reasons include broken pipes and also its better for mass manufacturing, hence 40% of 9800SE's can hit pro spec)

Btw those ATI 9800SE AIW selling online: my mate bought 4 and 1 soft modded so he was a bit unlucky... but £130quid for an ATI 9800SE AND its all in wonder.... bargain anyways

Just so i can understand this softmodding, once u mod it, and say it fails to boot.

Is there a way you can go back?

It's all done in the drivers, it will boot, if there is a problem you just boot into safe mode and change the setting in the driver.
