Graphics Card RAM Sinks + 3DMark05

Hello, I have just upgraded to PCI-Express from my AGP system.

I used to have a 6800GT AGP with a Zalman VF700-Cu Cooler on.

My new card which is a Leadtech 7800GT came with a loud stock cooler so I have changed it for the VF700-Cu, but the RAM Sinks have lost their stickiness and so they don't stick on too well to the new card's ram sinks.

So to get round this, I used a normal pritt stick to glue them on.

This isn't dangerous is it? There won't be a reaction or anything between them? Or the glue melts?

If it did, if one RAM thing overheated would it kill the card?

Oh yeah, I got 6883 3DMarks in 05 with my whole computer at stock as I don't overclock.

Is that around right for a 7800GT?

So if you know any of the answers to my questions please respond or if you have some of that thermal tape or adhesive please respond.

Pritt Stick!!!!! Don't use that!!!! Geeeeeee

I have a pack of Ram sinks, un-opened you can have for a fiver if you want. Just don't use pritt stick!!

If a pritt stick is a normal glue-stick there is a good chance you could fry your RAM. It all depends on how thick and how good the thermal conductivity is. If the glue does not conduct heat well (acts as an insulator instead of a conductor) you have a great chance of damaging your card.

I suggest you remove them, clean both surfaces very well with rubbing alcohol and re-attach them using a glue or paste that you know to be a strong thermal conductor.

Go down to ur local B&Q or Homebase and ask for some 3M thermal adhesive tape...

yes, but the critical point being THERMAL adhesive tape, you can also buy it at maplin (i think) its double sided tape that is also thermally conductive.

Some, but you need THERMAL tape. Make sure it actually says that.

When i took mine off i just bought replacement sinks as i was afraid of damaging the card. If you read the info from that link you can seethat the guy states that removal of the sinks at a later date may not be easy!!!

No it won't work.

Arctic Silver #5 by itself will be fine though. It's pretty sticky. Just put a very thin layer on.

The score you have seems about right for your clocks and hardware.

As said, the easiest way would be to just buy some thermal tape, though it's not as good as thermal adhesive. Some say just AS5 will hold the ramsinks, but if they fall off, don't blame anyone but yourself.

Ok, judging from the responses, I'm guessing this probably wasn't one of my finest ideas.

I have now done what "StormPC" said and just applied some Arctic Silver 5 and stuck the ram sinks on, they look sturdy enough but not as sturdy as pritt stick.

Anyone else any views on if Arctic Silver 5 is good enough?

umm... is B&Q or Maplins THAT far away? They shud cost less than a fiver for 1m roll of these.

I wouldnt count on AS5 tbh.. really... after a while, I bet its going to fall off. and when u carry things around or move things in ur rig.. its going to fall off.

Get those keys and drive to ur nearest hardware store m8..

there is a 'proper' thermal paste like AS5 but is also sticky and dries solid, but you'll order it, wait a week, it will arrive and you'll stick it on, costing you a load in p&p, or just go for the ds thermal tape, cheap and should be good enough.

If the thing falls, off, is there anything underneath it may short on? if so, i'd be very careful of not using the proper stuff. And pritt stick is not good, well, i'm assuming it isn't without checking as it's kind of gloopy. The AS5 will get harder the hotter the chips get and the longer its on there, but you're looking at a year or so.
